SYNOPSIS

Commemorates women's access to reproductive health care and anniversary of Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

As reported by the Assembly Human Services Committee on March 7, 2016.

A Concurrent Resolution commemorating women's access to reproductive health care and the 43rd anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade.

Whereas, The Legislature of the State of New Jersey recognizes 1[and celebrates]1 the importance of continued access to reproductive health care for women regardless of age, and it commemorates that on January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), established that the U.S. Constitution protects women's right to privacy and limits government interference with medical decisions; and

Whereas, The International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) defines reproductive health as the right of women to have access to safe, effective, affordable and acceptable methods of family planning of their choice; and

Whereas, It should be a public policy goal of the State of New Jersey to enhance the health of all its citizens, including improving women's reproductive health care and encouraging and promoting access to family planning and prenatal support services, which can help prevent unintended pregnancies and ensure that planned pregnancies remain healthy throughout their entire term; and

Whereas, The Legislature of the State of New Jersey will continue to protect a woman's constitutionally protected right to reproductive health care and 1[continue to celebrate] commemorates1 the United States Supreme Court upholding of the 1973 decision in Roe; and

Whereas, The Legislature believes that reproductive health care is a deeply personal and often complex situation for a woman, and therefore the decision of whether to choose adoption, end a pregnancy, or raise a child must be left to the woman, her family, and her faith, with the counsel of her doctor or health care provider; and

Whereas, Access to reproductive health care services such as safe and legal abortion, sex education, contraception, and family planning among others, remain of vital importance to the overall health of women; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey (the Senate concurring):

     1.    The Legislature commemorates women's right to reproductive health care and the 43rd anniversary of the United States Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade.

     2.    Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly or the Secretary of the Senate to each member of the New Jersey's Congressional delegation.
