     Requires "no turn on red" sign to be placed next to or below signal head.

An Act concerning certain traffic signs and amending P.L.1941, c.345.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    Section 13 of P.L.1941, c.345 (C.39:4-183.12) is amended to read as follows:

     13.  a.  All traffic signs shall be located as provided in subsequent sections of this act covering details of design and installation.  Signs other than temporary signs in the roadway shall be placed on the right side of the roadway, except traffic signs erected on or within traffic circles, islands, and safety zones.  All signs shall be mounted approximately at right angles to the direction of, and facing the traffic that they are intended to serve. This section shall not prohibit location of traffic signs over the roadway.

     b.    At intersections where a "no turn on red" sign is installed after the effective date of P.L.    , c.    (pending before the Legislature as this bill), the "no turn on red" sign shall be installed immediately below or immediately to the right or left of the appropriate signal head of the traffic light at a location clearly visible to drivers when stopped at the intersection, provided that the location of the sign complies with the applicable provisions of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways.

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill requires a "no turn on red" sign to be installed immediately below or immediately to the right or left of the signal head of a traffic light at a location that is clearly visible to drivers when stopped at the intersection, so long as the location of the "no turn on red" sign complies with the applicable provisions of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Street and Highways.  The provisions of the bill are to apply to "no turn on red" signs installed after the effective date of the bill.
