AN ACT relative to the election of members of the state board of education.

STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

 

In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Sixteen

 

AN ACT relative to the election of members of the state board of education.

 

Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:

 

1  Requirements for Election to State Board of Education.  Amend RSA 21-N:10, III to read as follows:

III.  The governor and council shall appoint the members of the board.  Five of the members shall be selected one each from the 5 executive councilor districts and 2 members shall be selected from the public at large.  Terms of office of members shall be for 4 years from the January 31 on which the terms of their predecessors expired.  Annually, on or before January 31, the governor shall name a member of the board who shall serve as chairperson for one year and until a successor is appointed.  No member of the board shall serve more than 3 consecutive full terms.

(a)  To hold the office of board member, a person shall be at least 30 years of age and, for at least the 2 years preceding his or her election, shall have been an inhabitant of this state.

(b)  If there is a vacancy in the position, the governor shall appoint a replacement who shall serve until the next election.

2  State and County Officers to Be Elected.  Amend RSA 653:1, V to read as follows:

V.  One sheriff, one county attorney, one county treasurer, one register of deeds, [and] one register of probate, and one member of the state board of education by the voters in each county;

3  Effective Date.  This act shall take effect January 1, 2017.
