A JOINT RESOLUTION honoring the life and memory of hector maclean, former member of the general assembly.

Whereas, Hector MacLean was born on September 15, 1920, in Baltimore County, Maryland, to Margaret French MacLean and Angus W. MacLean, who served as Governor of North Carolina from 1925 to 1929; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean grew up in Lumberton, North Carolina, where he attended the public schools; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean received a bachelor's degree in political science from Davidson College in 1941 and earned a law degree from the University of North Carolina in 1948; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean served our nation as a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army where he earned the rank of major and received a Bronze Star; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean practiced law in Lumberton for a few years before becoming President of the National Bank of Lumberton, an institution founded by his father in 1897 that eventually became Southern National Bank of North Carolina; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean became an outstanding leader in the banking industry, serving as President and then CEO of Southern National Bank of North Carolina until his retirement in 1990; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean also served as President of the Virginia and Carolina Southern Railroad; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean's extensive community service included serving as Mayor of the Town of Lumberton from 1949 to 1953, Chair of the Board of Trustees of St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Chair of the Council of the Thirteen Original States, Trustee at Union Theological Seminary, President of the Presbyterian Historical Foundation, and as a member of the Davidson College Board of Visitors and the St. Andrews Society; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean helped to establish the Robeson County Chapter of the United Way and was the founding chair of the Robeson County Historical Drama Association which produced the outdoor drama "Strike at the Wind"; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean served with honor and distinction in the General Assembly by filling an unexpired term in the Senate in 1961 and by being elected to four additional terms to the Senate between 1962 and 1971; and

Whereas, during Hector MacLean's tenure in the General Assembly, he was credited with helping to establish Pembroke State College (now the University of North Carolina at Pembroke) and the North Carolina Zoo; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean also served the State in many other capacities, including as founder and President of the North Carolina Medical Foundation and chair of the North Carolina Bicentennial Commission, and as a member of the North Carolina Library Resources Commission; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his lifetime; he was inducted into the North Carolina Business Hall of Fame and awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean was also honored by having a stretch of Interstate 95 through Lumberton named the "Hector MacLean Highway" and having a public library in Fairmont named in his honor; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean was active in the First Presbyterian Church in Lumberton, serving as a deacon and elder; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean died on December 7, 2012, at the age of 92; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Lyl Warwick MacLean; and

Whereas, Hector MacLean is survived by his daughter, Lyl MacLean Clinard; grandchildren, Lyl MacLean Clinard Kluttz and Aaron N. Clinard, Jr; and great grandchildren, Aaron N. Clinard, III, Rudduck M. Clinard, and William C. Kluttz, IV; Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

SECTION 1.  The General Assembly honors the memory of Hector MacLean and expresses its gratitude for the service he rendered his community, this State, and our nation.

SECTION 2.  The General Assembly extends its sympathy to the family of Hector MacLean for the loss of a beloved family member.

SECTION 3.  The Principal Clerk shall transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the family of Hector MacLean.

SECTION 4.  This resolution is effective upon ratification.
