A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE OF RESPECTED GULF COAST BUSINESSMAN, OYSTERMAN AND VETERAN POLICEMAN THOMAS "BAY" GOLLOTT OF D'IBERVILLE, MISSISSIPPI.
WHEREAS, respected D'Iberville, Mississippi, businessman, oysterman and veteran policeman Thomas "Bay" Gollott (93) passed away on February 27, 2010; and
WHEREAS, Bay was born on February 4, 1917, in Biloxi and remained a lifelong resident. At the age of 15 he started working with his Uncle Armond Gollott catching oysters. When he was 20, he worked with his Uncle Peter Wescovich dredging oysters which were sold to Cruso Packing Company. At the age of 22, he started shrimping with his Uncle Freddie Williams; and
WHEREAS, in January of 1940, at 23, he was employed with Harrison County as a truck driver. In 1944, he and his brother, Houston, opened City Cab Company in Biloxi; and
WHEREAS, in 1956 he joined Gollott and Son Transfer and Storage Company, Inc., along with his brother's sons Gary, Tommy (Mississippi Senator) and Tyrone Gollott; and
WHEREAS, in 1961 he was employed with the City of Biloxi Police Department where he retired after 20 years of dedicated service; and
WHEREAS, Bay's recreation for many years was catching oysters and after retirement, he and his wife, Hilda, traveled around the country; and
WHEREAS, Bay was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Hilda A. Quave Gollott, in August 1999. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Genevieve Cowan and Juanita Thorson; and brothers, Houston C. Gollott and Marshall Gollott; and
WHEREAS, Bay is survived by his four children and their spouses, Gordon Thomas Gollott, Sr., John Barry (Jo) Gollott, Karen Elizabeth (Sonny) Broadus, and Mary Lee (Elmer) Williams; sisters, Sue Harrell, Helen "Sugar" Skupien and Ettie Flowers; and thirteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of this respected Mississippi citizen who was an inspiration to his family and community:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life and mourn the passing of respected Mississippi Gulf Coast businessman, oysterman and veteran policeman Thomas "Bay" Gollott of D'Iberville, Mississippi, and extend our sympathy to his surviving family on his passing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Thomas "Bay" Gollott and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
