Senate Resolution 70

(As Adopted by Senate)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE JACKSON PREP "PATRIOTS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH TIM WISE FOR WINNING BACK-TO-BACK MAIS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS.

WHEREAS, in a game that became a battle of will versus skill, the Jackson Prep "Patriots" Boys Basketball Team held the Clinton Christian "Warriors" to six points in the fourth quarter defeating them 58-46 on March 1, 2023, at Mississippi College to win the 2023 MAIS Overall Championship for the second consecutive year; and

WHEREAS, after losing seven seniors off last season's Championship Team, the "Patriots" found leadership in senior Luke Segrest, who played tough defense against KJ Sykes, and on offense ran the show getting his teammates involved offensively, while scoring 12 points.  "Luke Segrest did an outstanding job throughout the year," Jackson Prep Coach Tim Wise said.  "He's our heart and soul"; and

WHEREAS, Coach Wise and his staff studied the last two games it played against the "Warriors."  Jackson Prep's Konnor Griffin was physical and played with force, dominating the glass on both ends of the floor.  Griffin led all scorers with 15 points, while getting help inside from William Laird, who added 10 points and Ben Segrest chipped in with 13 points.  Clinton Central (40-5) all game long would get to within a basket, but could never take the lead; and

WHEREAS, the 2022-2023 Jackson Prep "Patriots" Boys Basketball Team Roster:  De'Marion Tyler, Luke Segrest, Price Perkins, William Walker, EJ Vaughn, Cole Rutledge, Wells Jordan, William Laird, Lytle Moore, Sam Stogner, Barrett Lott, Konnor Griffin, Ben Segrest, Christopher Maddux, Hayden Frazure and Owen McCraney; Head Coach Tim Wise; and Assistant Coach Josh Glidewell; and

     WHEREAS, Prep has won the following Championships:  1975, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2012, 2013, 2022 and 2023; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Jackson Prep 'Patriots" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Tim Wise for winning back-to-back MAIS Basketball Championships, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Tim Wise for the team, forwarded to Prep Head of School Lawrence M. Coco, III, and the Board of Trustees, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
