A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE JACKSON ACADEMY "RAIDERS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH JESSE TAYLOR FOR WINNING THE 2024 MAIS CLASS 6A BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP AND WINNING THE 2024 MAIS OVERALL TOURNAMENT, THE "RAIDERS" FIRST OVERALL TITLE SINCE 2006.

     WHEREAS, we join the players, coaches, administration and parents of the 2023-2024 Jackson Academy "Raiders" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Jesse Taylor in celebrating the one-loss Regular Season with a State Championship in the MAIS Overall Tournament; and

     WHEREAS, Jackson Academy "Raiders" (36-1) won the MAIS Overall Tournament at A.E. Wood Coliseum (70-59) on February 28, 2024, against Madison-Ridgeland Academy (31-5).  It was the "Raiders" first overall title since 2006; and

     WHEREAS, "We have got great players and a great coaching staff," said Mike Williams, who scored game high of 23 points in the Championship Game.  "That's the thing to a great team, is a great coaching staff"; and

     WHEREAS, in the regular season finale, Mike Williams led No. 1 Jackson Academy (32-1) to its first MAIS 6A State Championship with a (54-53) win over No. 3 Jackson Prep (23-11) at Madison-Ridgeland Academy High School.  The "Raiders" won a 3A Title in 2014.  The final possession of the game was in the hands of Jackson Prep.  Jackson Prep had a chance to win the game with the last shot.  A double-team at the top of the key led to a bad pass, and Mike Williams came up with a steal and ran out the game clock; and

     WHEREAS, the Jackson Academy "Raiders" Boys Basketball Team Championship roster is:  D.J. Washington, Guard; Mike Williams, Guard; C.J. Banks, Guard; Caleb Gaitor, Guard; Fisher Waldrop, Guard; T.J. White, Guard/Forward; Marcus Goodloe, Guard; Schyler Chambers, Guard; Caleb Levy, Guard; Brister Robertson, Guard; Mason Williams, Guard; Kendell Davis, Forward; Carter Mathison, Guard; Josh Brown, Guard; Tyler Lyles, Forward; Parker Halford, Forward; Crew Hassell, Guard; Preston Taylor, Guard; Riley Edwards, Guard; and Caden Moss, Forward; Head Coach Jesse Taylor; and Assistant Coaches Danny Robertson and Andre Stringer; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Jackson Academy "Raiders" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Jesse Taylor for winning the 2024 MAIS Class 6A Boys Basketball Championship and winning the 2024 MAIS Overall Tournament, the "Raiders" first overall title since 2006, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future academic and athletic success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Jesse Taylor and Jackson Academy Headmaster W. Palmer Kennedy for the team, forwarded to the Jackson Academy Board of Trustees, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
