Senate Resolution 21

(As Adopted by Senate)

A RESOLUTION TO COMMEND SENATOR THOMAS EDWARD (TOM) KING, JR., FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE IN THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE.

     WHEREAS, Senator Thomas Edward (Tom) King, Jr., is retiring from the Mississippi Senate to run for higher office after serving 12 years in the Senate (2000-2011) and 6 years in the House of Representatives (1993-1999); and

     WHEREAS, Senator Tom King is a man of integrity and hard work with a complete knowledge of Mississippi's highway system, and there is an acknowledged respect of our esteemed colleague, gentleman and enlightened lawmaker; and

     WHEREAS, Tom King currently serves as Senator from District 44 in the Mississippi Senate.  District 44 is comprised of parts of Forrest, Lamar and Perry Counties; and

     WHEREAS, in the Senate, Tom serves as Chairman of the Highways and Transportation Committee, which handles a wide variety of legislative issues, including road construction matters.  He also serves on the Education, Finance, Insurance, Municipalities, Public Health and Welfare, Public Utilities, Rules, Universities and Colleges, and Veterans and Military Affairs Committees; and

     WHEREAS, Senator King credits the state's road program with helping to bring economic development projects to Mississippi.  He was instrumental in securing a $300 Million bond bill to repair bridges throughout the state.  King has said it will take a partnership between the state and local leaders to attract new business and industry to Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, he is the owner of King & Associates, an historical restoration consulting and contracting business.  He is a graduate of Petal High School and the University of Southern Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Senator King is a proud Veteran of the Vietnam War, and a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He is also a member of the Rotary Club and Lifetime Member of the University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association; and

     WHEREAS, Tom King is married to Susan Lynn Patterson of Hattiesburg.  They have two sons, Dr. Clay King and Chad King, and two granddaughters.  King is a member and Deacon at Petal-Harvey Baptist Church; and

     WHEREAS, Senator King's service has been marked by his commitment to success and recognized leadership, sound judgment and fairness.  He has set the highest standard in all of his many roles, as a father, husband, businessman, officer, citizen, statesman and leader in the Mississippi Senate and as a true friend:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and recognize Senator Tom King, Jr., whose outstanding service enriched everyone with whom he was associated, and we wish Tom and his family much success in their future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Senator Tom King and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
