A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING MISSISSIPPI SENATOR DOUG E. DAVIS FOR THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF HIS CAREER IN THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE AND FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI.
WHEREAS, Senator Doug E. Davis is a fifth-generation Mississippian. Doug is an Assistant Vice President at First Security Bank in Hernando, Mississippi, and has been with First Security since November of 2001. Senator Davis was elected to the State Senate in a special election in December of 2004 and was reelected in 2007 for a full four-year term; and
WHEREAS, the 2011 Regular Session was Senator Davis' first as Appropriations Chairman, being appointed to the post after previous Appropriations Chairman Alan Nunnelee, Republican from Tupelo, was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2010; and
WHEREAS, prior to 2011, Senator Davis was the Chairman of the Senate Universities and Colleges Committee and Vice Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Doug also served on 7 other Senate Committees including: Constitution, County Affairs, Economic Development, Education, Fees and Salaries, Highways and Transportation, and Tourism; and
WHEREAS, while in the Senate, Doug received the "Legislator of the Year Award" from the Mississippi State Troopers Association, the Mississippi Police Chiefs Association, the Mississippi Tourism Association, and the Friend of Agriculture Award from Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure as Chairman of the Senate Universities and Colleges Committee, Senator Doug Davis held hearings on the administrative structure of the College Board and the allocation formula for universities and community colleges. He filed legislation to provide cost savings to citizens in military service and legislation to protect Mississippi's children. Senator Davis was an expert in the Senate Rules and was very mindful of the historical traditions of the Mississippi Senate; and
WHEREAS, Doug is an active member of his community serving in the Hernando Rotary Club, the DeSoto County Economic Development Council, the DeSoto County Arts Council, Past President of the Hernando Main Street Chamber of Commerce, and a supporter of the Palmer Home for Children; and
WHEREAS, Doug attended Mississippi College and attends Longview Point Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, we are grateful for Doug's legacy of service and friendship in the State Senate:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize the dedicated public service of Senator Doug E. Davis (District 1) of Hernando, Mississippi, and wish Doug much success in his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Senator Doug Davis and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
