A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING KAYLA STRICKER ON BEING SELECTED AS THE 2009 STATE GAMES OF MISSISSIPPI AT&T FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR.

     WHEREAS, Kayla Stricker, an exceptional athlete from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, competed in the 2009 State Games of Mississippi running and powerlifting and was selected as the 2009 State Games of Mississippi AT&T Female Athlete of the Year; and

     WHEREAS, Kayla, a 15-year-old tenth grader at Oak Grove High School, has competed in three State Games of Mississippi and has won an impressive three gold medals over the past ten years; and

     WHEREAS, at the 2009 Games, Kayla won the Gold Medal in Cross-Country with a time of 17:20 before running an early morning 5K Run with a time of 21:03, and then rushing to the Powerlifting Venue to take yet another Gold, with a total lift of 415 pounds the following week; and

     WHEREAS, running competitively since the age of five, Kayla has competed in high school track and field since seventh grade, making it to the State Championship for three years; and

     WHEREAS, Kayla, winner of the State Championship in the 1600 meter run in her eighth grade year, competes on her high school cross-country, track and soccer teams; and

      WHEREAS, Kayla's running personal records include a 5:32 in the 1600 meter event, a 12:20 in the two-mile event and a 2:31.58 in the 800 meter run; and

     WHEREAS, to prepare for her other sports, Kayla participates in powerlifting and holds a black belt in Martial Arts, while maintaining a B average in school; and

     WHEREAS, this exceptional Magnolia State athlete is Christ-fueled by her faith in God, which is reflected by her sportsmanship and spirit during competition; and

     WHEREAS, Kayla's enthusiasm and talent for the unique sports of running and powerlifting reflect great pride upon herself, her family, her teachers and the State of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, it is with pride that we recognize this young Mississippi athlete who has brought honor to her community and state:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Kayla Stricker on being selected as the 2009 State Games of Mississippi AT&T Female Athlete of the Year and express heartiest wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Kayla Stricker and her family and be made available to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
