MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE

By: Senator(s) Watson, Jackson (32nd)
Senate Concurrent Resolution 689
(As Adopted by Senate and House)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE MOSS POINT HIGH SCHOOL "TIGERS" GIRLS POWERLIFTING TEAM AND COACH KYLE MICKELSON FOR WINNING THE MHSAA CLASS II STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN ONLY THEIR SECOND YEAR.
WHEREAS, the Moss Point Girls Powerlifting Team earned a Class II State Championship in just its second year in existence; and
WHEREAS, in a field typically dominated by men, the Moss Point School District Girls Powerlifting Team is dominating the sport. 2016 was also Coach Kyle Mickelson's first season coaching the ladies, and he had to quickly drum up student support; and
WHEREAS, "Because this is a new sport at the school, gym time is limited, especially during football season. The girls showed up at 5:30 in the morning, worked out, and then went to school," said Coach Mickelson, who admitted that he had quite a few naysayers who did not think that a workout at 5:30 in the morning was going to succeed; however, the ladies proved them wrong. "All of our ladies strive for excellence, and I wouldn't ask for anything less" says Mickelson. "Trinity Cooper and Destiny McCants are also state-ranked in Girls Powerlifting in the State of Mississippi"; and
WHEREAS, after recently hosting its first-ever powerlifting meet in the high school gymnasium, qualifying for the South State Regionals, and advancing to State Regionals in April, the Moss Point High School Girls Powerlifting Team is now ranked in the top 10 in the nation. "All of the 5:00 a.m. practices and weekend workouts have really paid off," expressed Niya Cooper, who is ranked #5 in the nation for her weight class; and
WHEREAS, the Moss Point High School "Tigers" Girls Powerlifting Team Roster is: AiDora Shelby, Niya Cooper, Courtney Nash, Triniti Cooper, Shakel Bolton, Nadia Nicholson, Destiny McCants, Alanna Gaines, Courtney Sellers, Ashley Stallworth, Diavian Cooper, Shekinah Collie, and Manager Kori Wells; Head Coach Kyle Mickelson; and Assistant Coach Shana Gunter; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a dream season by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Moss Point High School "Tigers" Girls Powerlifting Team and Coach Kyle Mickelson for winning the MHSAA Class II State Championship in only their second year and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches and parents for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Kyle Mickelson for the team, Moss Point Principals Jeff Mumford and Janice Thomas, forwarded to the Moss Point School Board, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
