A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING HANNAH WILLIAMS OF JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI, FOR ATTAINING THE "MISS MISSISSIPPI UNITED STATES 2015" TITLE AND EXTEND THE BEST WISHES OF THE MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE AS SHE COMPETES IN THE NATIONAL PAGEANT IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

     WHEREAS, Hannah Williams is a talented 21-year-old university student from Jackson, Mississippi.  She was crowned as "Miss Mississippi United States 2015" on January 1, 2015, by the National Director of Contestants, Victoria Haler.  This was her first attempt at the State Title; and

     WHEREAS, Hannah will represent the State of Mississippi at the National Pageant in Washington, D.C., the week of June 30-July 5, 2015.  Hannah's platform is The Green Ribbon Campaign:  Depression Awareness.  Her goal is to raise awareness on the subject by exposing the noticeable symptoms for self/early detection, treatment options and clear up stereotypes especially among youth and young adults.  This is a topic near and dear to her because she was diagnosed as suffering from clinical depression in September 2013; and

     WHEREAS, Hannah has participated in panel discussions and served as a mentor to other young women.  She hopes to continue to deliver her message via speaking engagements, motivational camps and social media; and

     WHEREAS, she graduated from William B. Murrah High School, Class of 2011.  She is a Senior History Major at Jackson State University where her family has ties to JSU back to the 1930s.  She hopes to continue her education and become an architectural historian.  Since attending Jackson State she was named Miss History 2011-2012 and Miss Personality for the Class of 2015.  She was elected as Miss IMS-Jackson State Modeling Squad 2014-2015.  Hannah has received the Iota Phi Theta Appreciation Award and received a scholarship from the Brookhaven/Lincoln County Alumni Association; and

     WHEREAS, Hannah has continued honing her leadership by serving as Assistant Secretary of the History Club 2012-2013 and currently serves as Vice President 2014-2015.  She has sponsored an on-campus canned food drive.  Currently she is a member of Essence of a Lady Tiger where she serves as a mentor to freshmen students and the Special Events Coordinator.  Hannah is a member of the Student Leadership Institute, NAACP, and Maddrama Performance Troop S.C.E.N.E. 65; and

     WHEREAS, she is a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Brookhaven, Mississippi.  Hannah is the granddaughter of Phillip, Sr., and Flora Kelly of Brookhaven and daughter of Louwlynn Williams of Jackson and Frank Williams, Jr., of Lafayette, Louisiana.  Her favorite quote comes from Oprah Winfrey.  "Think like a queen.  A queen is not afraid to fail.  Failure is just another stepping stone to success":

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Hannah Williams of Jackson, Mississippi, for attaining the "Miss Mississippi United States 2015" Title and extend the best wishes of the Legislature as she competes in the National Pageant in Washington, D.C.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Hannah Williams and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
