A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE GULFPORT GALLERIA OF FINE ART ON ITS 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF SUCCESS FOLLOWING THE DEVASTATION OF HURRICANE KATRINA.

     WHEREAS, the Gulfport Galleria of Fine Art is a nonprofit cooperative organization of artists, craftsmen and writers who have combined their works, talents and energies for the benefit of the individual artists as well as the community at large; and

     WHEREAS, the Gallery was founded by Mary Anne Barkley and the late Kathy McCall after Hurricane Katrina and held its grand opening in June 2007; and

     WHEREAS, the Gallery reaches out to the public through workshops, demonstrations and exhibits, all showcasing and encouraging artistic and musical talents; and

     WHEREAS, the goal of the coop is to maintain a space where artists are encouraged to display original work while appealing to the coastal community, thereby raising cultural awareness and opportunities on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  The spirit of the coop is one of personal responsibility, sound judgment and cooperation among the members; and

     WHEREAS, as the first coop to open after Hurricane Katrina, the Gulfport Galleria of Fine Art will celebrate its 5th Anniversary.  Some of the highlights during its 4-1/2 years include:  a book signing by Robin Roberts of "Good Morning America," an Evening of Gilbert and Sullivan and Friends, presented by the Gulf Coast Opera Theatre and a book signing by Galleria Member Marlin Miller; and

     WHEREAS, the Gulfport Galleria of Fine Art is an amazing cooperative Art Gallery that provides 35 artists a venue to exhibit and sell originally and locally created works of art.  The Gallery has undergone an exciting move to the heart of Historic Downtown Gulfport.  The Gulfport Galleria of Fine Art has built a reputation over the past five years for quality artwork and unique gifts.  As the Gulfport Galleria of Fine Art has continued to grow, so have its needs and scope of its mission.  The Galleria has moved from the Historic Kassis Grocery Building on the corner of Twenty-Fifth Street and Twenty-Second Avenue to 1401 23rd Avenue in Historic Downtown Gulfport, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, the Galleria features original paintings (oils, acrylics and watercolors), award-winning photography, great new creations:  Katrina tree carvings, metal sculptures, hand-built clay sculptures, clay carvings and wheel-thrown pottery, woodturnings, fused glass and mosaics, jewelry and custom glassware, original volumes of fiction and poetry, fine art cards and quality prints; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this fine arts cooperative which has brought a resurgence of economic and artistic activity to Downtown Gulfport and is a symbol of the Mississippi Gulf Coast following the destruction of Hurricane Katrina:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and congratulate the Gulfport Galleria of Fine Art on its 5th Anniversary of success following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, and we extend our best wishes to the merchants, artisans and staff of this excellent organization.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Mrs. Mary Anne Barkley, Chairwoman of the Gulfport Galleria of Fine Art, forwarded to the Gulfport City Council, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
