Senate Concurrent Resolution 661

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING SCOTT GRAY III ON BEING SELECTED AS THE 2010 STATE GAMES OF MISSISSIPPI AT&T MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR.

WHEREAS, Scott Gray III, a 15-year-old soccer and volleyball player from West Lauderdale High School, was selected as the 2010 State Games of Mississippi AT&T Male Athlete of the Year; and

WHEREAS, the award seeks to honor those athletes who personify the ideals of the State Games movement, such as participation, sportsmanship, achievement, effort and positive attitude; and

WHEREAS, the 2010 Male Athlete of the Year, Scott Gray III, has been playing soccer for 10 years.  He has participated in the State Games Youth Soccer event for 4 years; and

WHEREAS, Scott and his team, the Meridian Code Blue, took the U16 Gold Medal at the 2010 Games.  As the goalie, Scott had more than 40 shots attempted and made an impressive 32 saves with 16 of them under attack.  The Meridian Code Blue retaliated in the State Games Tournament by defeating 3 teams that had defeated them earlier in the regular soccer season.  "With very little goalie training, Scott is showing that he is very much a natural," said Sonja Rowell, State Games of Mississippi Soccer Commissioner.  "He played very strong during the State Games Tournament and was a standout in this event."  Scott has always been the youngest on his team and will now be playing in the U18 Division; and

WHEREAS, Scott also plays on the West Lauderdale High School Soccer Team where he was the starting goalie as a young 10th grader.  During the high school season Scott had more than 100 shots taken at his goal with 71 saves, 46 of them under attack.  The team continued to the 4A State Championships where they won North State; and

WHEREAS, although Scott's nomination came from his obvious soccer abilities, he is a multitalented athlete.  He has competed in the State Games 2-Man and 4-Man Volleyball events as well, winning Bronze in 2008 and 2009 and Silver in 2010.  Scott has grown up around the volleyball circuit watching not only his father compete, but his mother as well.  The Gray family promotes this sporting event not only in the State Games of Mississippi but also at tournaments throughout the Southeast as a fun, family friendly, competitive event.  "Scott is continuing this tradition as he, too, exemplifies the spirit of the State Games of Mississippi," said Reed; and

WHEREAS, Female Athlete of the Year Jaycee Tutor and Gray have been entered in the 2010 National Congress of State Games Athlete of the Year Competition.  The winner will be announced at the National Congress of State Games Symposium in San Diego, California, on September 23, 2011.  As the AT&T Athletes of the Year, Tutor and Gray will be the official torch runners in the 2011 State Games of Mississippi's Opening Ceremonies and will work with the State Games of Mississippi throughout the year to promote amateur athletics for all Mississippians; and

WHEREAS, it is with pride that we recognize this young Mississippi citizen who has brought honor to his community and state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Scott Gray III on being selected as the 2010 State Games of Mississippi AT&T Male Athlete of the Year and extend best wishes to him on this honor.
