A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE NORTHPOINT CHRISTIAN SCHOOL "LADY TROJANS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH BARRY GRAY FOR WINNING THEIR SECOND CONSECUTIVE TSSAA CLASS A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, Ashtyn Baker, a Miss Basketball Finalist, scored 25 points to lead Northpoint Christian to its second straight title with a 70-54 win over University School of Jackson in the Tennessee Division II-A Girls Final on March 10, 2017; and
WHEREAS, Baker was named Tournament MVP for the second straight year after hitting 7 of 8 foul shots and grabbing six rebounds; and
WHEREAS, Jade Wells added 17 points, and Lindsey Whiteside scored 15 for the Lady Trojans (29-2), who won their last 20 games; and
WHEREAS, Anna Jones, a 6-foot-1 Middle Tennessee signee and Miss Basketball Finalist, fouled out with 2:13 left after scoring 17 points for Jackson (29-4). Teammate Ashton Hulme also scored 17; and
WHEREAS, the Lady Trojans outscored the Lady Bruins 24-16 in points off turnovers and 12-2 in fastbreak points; and
WHEREAS, Northpoint (Southaven, Mississippi) turned a one-point lead into a 26-16 advantage with a 9-0 run in the second quarter to take control; and
WHEREAS, this victory puts DeSoto County in the unique situation of having two State Championships in two different states this year, as Olive Branch High School Girls Basketball Team won the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 6A Title; and
WHEREAS, Northpoint Christian School athletics is committed to maintaining the goals and standards set forth by the school and its administration. They believe athletics is an excellent tool to be used for God's glory. Northpoint Christian School's approach to athletics stem directly from God's Word. As a result, they are seeking to develop the physical and the spiritual life of the athlete; and
WHEREAS, the 2017 "Lady Trojans" Girls Basketball Championship Roster is: Gigi Richardson, McKinley Baker, Allie Enders, Hallie Goodwin, Ashtyn Baker, Micaela Brown, Hadie Sowell, Caroline Swmdoll, Mason Branning, Amara McKay, Lauren Gross, Hannah Shafer, Jade Wells, Lindsey Whiteside; and Head Coach Barry Gray; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a dream season by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Northpoint Christian School "Lady Trojans" Girls Basketball Team and Coach Barry Gray for winning their second consecutive Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Class A State Championship and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents, and sponsors for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Barry Gray for the team, Northpoint Christian School President David Manley and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
