A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING THE HOLMES COMMUNITY COLLEGE PHI THETA KAPPA CHAPTERS FOR NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL AWARDS.

     WHEREAS, Phi Theta Kappa Chapters at each campus of Holmes Community College have recently been honored with national and international awards.  These awards signify a world-class achievement which has been earned by the students and advisors at each Holmes Community College Campus and is a landmark event in the history of Holmes and the history of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society in Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, the following awards were garnered by each institution on April 14, 2012, in Nashville, Tennessee:

     Goodman Chapter:

     World's Most Distinguished Chapter

     Distinguished College Project Award

     Distinguished "Issue Award" Honors in Action Issue 10 History & the Future

     Distinguished "Honors in Action Project"

     Beta Alpha Continued Chapter Excellence Award

     Jeff Edwards was the recipient of the Continued Excellence Advisor Award;

     Grenada Chapter:

     Fifth Finalist Most Distinguished Chapter

     Distinguished College Project

     Distinguished Honors in Action Project

     Distinguished "Issue Award" Honors in Action Issue 6 Economy in Business

     Beta Alpha Continued Chapter Excellence Award;

     Ridgeland Chapter:

     Fifth Finalist Most Distinguished Chapter

     Honors Case Study Award (one of only four presented)

     Distinguished College Project Award

     Distinguished "Issue Award" Honors in Action Issue 9 Science

     Distinguished Chapter Award

     Distinguished Honors in Action Project

     William Harris Reunion was awarded the Distinguished Member Award for his work on the Honors Case Study; and

     WHEREAS, Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society of two-year colleges and academic programs.  The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa shall be to recognize and encourage scholarships among two-year college students.  The society was established in 1910 at Stephens College, a Missouri two-year women's college.  It is now considered to be the largest Honor's Society in the world.  It is estimated that 200,000 students participate in Phi Theta Kappa programs every year, with approximately 100,000 students inducted annually.  In 2006, Phi Theta Kappa inducted its two-millionth member.  Phi Theta Kappans participate in several gatherings each year, with the International Convention held in early to mid-April.  The 2012 Convention was held in Nashville, Tennessee.  It had a total of 4,030 attendees, the largest number of attendees in Phi Theta Kappa's history.  At the International Convention, Phi Theta Kappans recognized achievements by members in "Hallmark" areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship.  Elections for the five international offices are also held at the International Convention.  Also judged are entries for other various categories, including distinguished Chapter Officer, President and Advisor.  Arts from across the country are judged, as well as the chapters themselves.  Every year a chapter is selected as Chapter of the Year; this is the chapter which has received the highest overall scores in all hallmark categories; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we join the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society in saluting the success of the students, faculty and administration of this outstanding community college which has brought honor to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and congratulate the Holmes Community College Phi Theta Kappa Chapters for the national and international awards received on April 14, 2012, and extend our best wishes to the students, faculty and administration for continued success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Dr. Glenn Boyce, President of Holmes Community College, forwarded to the Mississippi Board for Community Colleges, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
