A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE NESHOBA CENTRAL "LADY ROCKETS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH FREDERICK MORRIS FOR WINNING THEIR FIRST STATE TITLE SINCE 1991.
WHEREAS, Taylor Ben scored 16 points, pulled down nine rebounds and dished out three assists to lead the "Lady Rockets" Girls Basketball Team past West Point 56-45 to claim the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Girls Class 5A State Championship on March 10, 2017, at the Mississippi Coliseum; and
WHEREAS, it is the "Lady Rockets" second State Championship in school history. The other came in 1991; and
WHEREAS, Relissa Ray had a team-high 18 points and had two steals for Neshoba Central, while Andria Carter chipped in nine points, eight rebounds and four steals for the Lady Rockets
19-10; and
WHEREAS, Neshoba Central only trailed once, 37-35 late in the third quarter, but Carter had a steal and lay-up to tie the game at 37 to end the third quarter. Aamiya Rush had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead West Point, while Amari Heard added 13 points for the Lady Wave 21-6, who were playing in the State Championship Game for the first time in school history; and
WHEREAS, earlier the Neshoba Central "Lady Rockets" advanced to the semifinals round of the Girls Class 5A State Basketball Tournament with a 54-43 victory over Hattiesburg and defeated a familiar foe, the Lanier Lady Bulldogs, in the semifinals 36-32; and
WHEREAS, the 2016-2017 "Lady Rockets" Girls Basketball Team Championship Roster is: Lorianna John, PG, SG; Hallie Billie; Cori Keats, PG; Ta'corchia Nash, SF; Jeleisya Jim, G; Taylor Ben; Jasmine Chickaway, PG; Mykenzie Bester; Kaylee Routh; Lyeric Hickman, SG; Sindie Williams, SG, SF; Shantasia Ruffin; Relissia Ray; Andria Carter; and Zaire Marshall, C; and Coach Fredrick Morris; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Neshoba Central "Lady Rockets" Girls Basketball Team and Coach Frederick Morris for winning their first State Title since 1991, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents, and sponsors for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Frederick Morris, Neshoba Central Principal John Bowen, forwarded to the Neshoba County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
