Senate Concurrent Resolution 646
(As Adopted by Senate and House)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE BAY ST. LOUIS HIGH SCHOOL "TIGERS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH KELTON THOMPSON FOR WINNING THE "BATTLE OF THE BAY" AND THE MHSAA CLASS 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, four years ago, neither Bay High School nor crosstown rival St. Stanislaus had gymnasiums in which to play or practice. On March 5, 2010, at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson, Mississippi, they played one another for the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A Boys Basketball State Championship. Regardless of which team won, the victor would bring back its first Gold Ball Championship Trophy to this historic, quaint Gulf Coast village, most of which was blown away or flooded by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005; and
WHEREAS, Daron Bell scored 21 points and Bay High of Bay St. Louis exploded in the fourth quarter to beat crosstown rival St. Stanislaus 51-39 and claim the MHSAA Class 4A Boys State Basketball Championship; and
WHEREAS, down 26-16 with 16 seconds left in the third quarter, the Tigers (34-3) went on a 15-0 run to take a 31-26 lead with 4:30 left in the game. They ended the game by outscoring the Rock-a-Chaws (28-8) 35-13, converting numerous turnovers into transition points and catching fire from the 3-point line; and
WHEREAS, Bay High, coached by Kelton Thompson, won its first State Championship and denied St. Stanislaus and Coach Jay Ladner their first title. Coach Thompson played for Coach Ladner at St. Stanislaus; and
WHEREAS, the two schools, separated by just 1.2 miles in downtown Bay St. Louis, met for the fifth time this season. St. Stanislaus won the first two regular season meetings. Bay won the last three, all for championships - Division, South State and, now, the top title; and
WHEREAS, "No matter what happens, Bay St. Louis can't lose," Les Fillingame, the town's Mayor, said about this town, which is still rebuilding from the largest natural disaster in United States history. "We can all learn lessons from the resilience of youth," Fillingame said. "The spirit of our kids is just phenomenal." Mayor Fillingame, who graduated from Bay High but whose son graduated from St. Stanislaus, followed through on the local celebration: No matter who won - both teams were honored by a parade right down Main Street and the rebuilt Beach Boulevard; and
WHEREAS, the 2009-2010 Tigers roster is as follows: Daron Bell, PG, Sr.; Cole Coe, G, Jr.; Chris Myers, G, So.; Skyler Favre, G, Sr.; Devin Fearrington, G, Sr.; E.J. Taylor, F, Sr.; Howard Weaver, PG, So.; Terrance Eley, F, Jr.; Demitry Johnson, G, Sr.; Devon Narcisse, G, Sr.; Clifton White, F, So.; William Harris, G, Jr.; Alonzo Artis, C, Jr.; Brennan Dunklin, G, Jr.; Michael Johnson, G, So.; Brandon Primus, G, So.; Taylor Singleton, G, So.; Head Coach Kelton Thompson; and Assistant Coaches Dave Kenson and Randy McCrory; and
WHEREAS, this was the first State Championship trophy in Bay High history, coming 52 years after the program's only previous trip to the State Tournament, and all the credit goes to the players who have brought honor to their school, their family, their community, the Mississippi Gulf Coast and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Bay St. Louis High School "Tigers" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Kelton Thompson for winning the "Battle of the Bay" and their first Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A State Championship, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, sponsors and administration for this inspirational achievement and for future successes.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Kenton Thompson and Principal Dr. Andy Parker for the team, forwarded to the Bay-Waveland Separate School District Board of Trustees and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
