A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING RHYTHM AND BLUES AND GOSPEL MUSIC ARTIST MISS DOROTHY MOORE.

WHEREAS, Dorothy Moore, an internationally known rhythm and blues and gospel recording artist, was born in Jackson, Mississippi, where she makes her home today; and

WHEREAS, Miss Moore began her highly successful musical career in 1965 singing with The Poppies; and

WHEREAS, Miss Moore developed her voice and artistic style as a backup singer for several well-loved rhythm and blues recording artists, including King Floyd and Jean Knight; and

WHEREAS, Dorothy Moore's dedication and hard work eminently resulted in a number one hit - her popular version of the tune "Misty Blue" - on the American rhythm and blues and British pop charts in 1975; and

WHEREAS, a favorite for some time, Miss Moore's "Misty Blue" peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for rhythm and blues single of the year in 1976; and

WHEREAS, that same year, Dorothy Moore captured Billboard's Number One Female Rhythm and Blues Vocalist Award, the Image Award given by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and a Grammy nomination for best rhythm and blues female vocalist of the year; and

WHEREAS, Dorothy Moore has four Grammy Award nominations. Her version of "Misty Blue" appeared on the 2005 compilation album, "Classic Soul Ballads." She has been inducted into the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Dorothy Moore's talent as a vocalist has enabled her to successfully cross between rhythm and blues and gospel music; and

WHEREAS, Miss Moore's 1986 gospel record, "Giving It Straight to You," reached number thirteen on Billboard's spiritual albums chart; and

WHEREAS, Miss Moore has performed live all over the world, including a Japan Tour in 1989, a London and Toronto Tour in 1990, the Jazz Club Lionel Hampton in Paris in 1995, Madison Square Garden in New York, the Las Vegas Hilton and The Apollo. In 1993 and 1994, Miss Moore performed at the Monterey Blues Festival; and

WHEREAS, Dorothy Moore has successfully recorded many albums, many of which bear the label of hometown recording studio Malaco Records; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of her tremendous success, Mississippian Dorothy Moore was presented with the 1996 Artist's Achievement Award during presentation of the 1996 Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts:

WHEREAS, Miss Moore has always been an outstanding ambassador for the State of Mississippi as she has traveled to many foreign lands to touch the hearts of millions all over the world:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSISSIPPI STATE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend internationally-known recording artist Dorothy Moore of Jackson, Mississippi, on her many achievements and accomplishments in the music industry and extend to her our best wishes in her future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to Miss Dorothy Moore and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
