Senate Concurrent Resolution 629

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE DISTINGUISHED LAW ENFORCEMENT CAREER OF LT. COLONEL KEVIN MYERS, DIRECTOR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY'S ADMINISTRATIVE OPERATIONS, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

WHEREAS, an outstanding and distinguished law enforcement career is ending with the retirement of Lt. Colonel Kevin Myers, who is presently serving as Director of the Department of Public Safety's Administrative Operations and formerly assisted the Mississippi Senate as Director of the Lieutenant Governor's Security and Director of Governor's Security; and

WHEREAS, Lt. Colonel Myers completed the 21-week Patrol Program located at the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers' Training Academy (MLEOTA) in Pearl in December 1993, Cadet Class 48.  Upon graduation he worked in the Enforcement Division of Troops J and C.  In 1996 he received Tri-County State Officer of the Year and Metro Top Cop.  He then transitioned into Executive Protection serving as Director for Speaker Tim Ford.  Lt. Colonel Myers was asked to serve as Legislative Liaison for the Department of Public Safety (DPS) where he was successful in getting legislative and budgetary items passed that focused on making the life of a trooper better; and

WHEREAS, Governor Bryant tapped Lt. Colonel Myers as Director of Lieutenant Governor's Security and then transitioned him to Director of Governor's Security in 2012.  In January 2016, Governor Bryant announced the appointment of Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Myers as Director of the Department of Public Safety's Administrative Operations; and

WHEREAS, Myers' father and uncle are both retired Troopers.  His Uncle John Myers served as Sergeant-At-Arms of the Mississippi Senate under two administrations; and

WHEREAS, a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, Myers received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Mississippi in 1991.  He and his wife, Lynne, live in Gluckstadt with their daughter, Mason.  They attend Flora United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS, "Law enforcement is only going to be as successful as our community," said Myers.  "Getting out and protecting the public is very rewarding, and we are blessed to live in a state that our citizens back law enforcement tremendously.  The number-one function of government in my opinion is public safety, because if you don't have public safety nothing else really matters.  My goal has always been to live up to our motto of courtesy, service and safety and to treat people with respect.  It is extremely important to me to go out and make an impression on young people and encourage them to make good decisions"; and

WHEREAS, Kevin Myers used the opportunity to lead the state's top law enforcement agency to set a high bar for professionalism and transparency and did an outstanding job leading the men and women who keep us safe each day.  We can never repay our debt to law enforcement officers and their families, and we should not pause and remember to thank them in the wake of tragedy, we should do it every day.  We pay tribute and cherish fondly the service of this most public-spirited law enforcement officer and citizen who has a record of achievement and a legacy of leadership and dedication to all in Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the distinguished law enforcement career of Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Myers, Director of the Department of Public Safety's Administrative Operations, on the occasion of his retirement, and extend our thanks to Kevin and his family on this auspicious occasion.
