MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE

2016 Regular Session

To: Rules

By: Senator(s) Browning, Barnett, Dearing, Jackson (32nd), Jolly, Stone

Senate Concurrent Resolution 627

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE INGOMAR HIGH SCHOOL "LADY FALCONS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH TRENT ADAIR FOR AN UPSET WIN IN THE MHSAA CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, not many prognosticators gave Ingomar High School Girls Basketball Team a fighting chance to win the Class 2A Championship on March 11, 2016.  The Lady Falcons were going up against the only unbeaten girls' team in the state in Heidelberg, and their roster included one junior and the rest were freshmen and sophomores.  But their methodical offense and fundamental defense helped pull them back in the game after trailing at the half, and eventually overtake the Lady Oilers, rallying for a 41-40 win and the biggest upset of the State Championships at the Mississippi Coliseum; and

WHEREAS, Mallory Russell scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high eight boards in 28 minutes.  Her blocked shot with 51 seconds remaining helped Ingomar win its fourth State Title and first since 1994; and

WHEREAS, "It was just chip away, chip away, chip away," Ingomar Coach Trent Adair said.  "We've been good defensively all year.  I felt like if we kept shooting them they will go in if we just stuck to it.  And if we got close enough, the pressure shifted to them being undefeated and that would weigh heavily.  And it worked"; and

WHEREAS, the 2016 Ingomar Lady Falcons Girls Basketball Championship Roster is:  Sydney Roberts, Gara Beth Self, Abby Deaton, Carson Grisham, Lauren Wooley, Lindsay Hall, Allie Williams, Ashley Forester, Maggie Smithey, Cheyenne Childers, Lauren Thompson, Mallory Russell and Patience Golden; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a dream season by a group of young student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Ingomar High School "Lady Falcons" Girls Basketball Team and Coach Trent Adair for an upset win in the MHSAA Class 2A State Championship, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Trent Adair for the team, Ingomar Principal Mark Grubbs, forwarded to the Union County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
