Senate Concurrent Resolution 627

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING BILL ELLISON AND MISSISSIPPI PUBLIC BROADCASTING'S "GRASSROOTS" RADIO SHOW UPON RECEIVING THE 2010 GOVERNOR'S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN BROADCASTING AND FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CAREER ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

WHEREAS, Mr. Bill Ellison and Mississippi Public Broadcasting's "Grassroots" Radio Show is receiving the Governor's Award for Excellence in Broadcasting and is being honored in appropriate ceremonies on February 25, 2010, at Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS, this prestigious award, which is a part of the Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts, is presented to outstanding writers, artists, performers, craftsmen and educators who have made significant and lasting contributions through their work on the basis of their dedication to arts advancement; and

WHEREAS, lovers of music, especially bluegrass, acoustic and folk music, have a standing appointment every Saturday night when radio airwaves broadcast Mississippi Public Broadcasting's "Grassroots"; and

WHEREAS, ever since Mississippi Public Broadcasting began its statewide radio network in 1984, "Grassroots" has been a fixture in the Saturday night line up.  In its 25-year history, there have been only two hosts, Mike Morgan was the original host and Bill Ellison has hosted for the past 17 years; and

WHEREAS, Bill Ellison compares his work on "Grassroots" to that of a museum curator as he unearths and shares treasures from America's and Mississippi's musical past.  Whether it is a spotlight on a Leake County string band recording from the 1930's, or announcing the next show date for a band of "outlaw" college bluegrass musicians from Oxford, listeners know that "Grassroots" is the source; and

WHEREAS, "Grassroots" is showing no signs of letting up in making a lasting and significant contribution to Mississippi's rich artistic legacy.  The award was nominated by Mari Irby, Mississippi Public Broadcasting; and

WHEREAS, Bill is also an excellent guitarist specializing in bluegrass style music with his long-standing popular group "The Vernon Brothers"; and

WHEREAS, it is with great honor and pride that we recognize this radio broadcaster and musical talent, whose outstanding accomplishments are a remarkable positive reflection upon the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Bill Ellison and Mississippi Public Broadcasting's "Grassroots" Radio Show upon being awarded the 2010 Governor's Award for Excellence in Broadcasting and we wish him much success as he continues to advance the arts in all his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Bill Ellison, be forwarded to the Mississippi Arts Commission, and be made available to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
