Senate Concurrent Resolution 622
(As Adopted by Senate and House)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE QUITMAN HIGH SCHOOL "LADY PANTHERS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH GINA SKELTON FOR CAPTURING THEIR FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, on March 10, 2016, Quitman High School Coach Skelton's Lady Panthers pulled away late with a 15-3 run and claimed the school's first Basketball Championship with a 58-48 victory over Florence in the MHSAA Class 4A final; and
WHEREAS, Dandy Dozen guard Shonte Hailes poured in 24 points and led Quitman (27-6) with 12 rebounds. The senior and Southern Miss commitment made all nine of her shots from the floor and drained her only 3-point attempt. Chequira Bonner, another senior, turned in a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Panthers played smart basketball. They shot 55% from the floor and recorded assists on 12 of their 23 buckets; and
WHEREAS, Coach Skelton said, "I've been blessed with great assistants and great players. We just try to do what we can to get the best out of them"; and
WHEREAS, when the final whistle blew, the Quitman players all converged around the four seniors, Hailes, Bonner, Sendreca Howard and Amber McKenzie, the only four players left who were in the room when Coach Strickland took her three championship rings off four years ago. "We finally got another championship after four long years," McKenzie said. "And it feels great"; and
WHEREAS, the 2016 Quitman High School Lady Panthers Championship Team Roster is: Keriunna Bonner, Kara Miller, Shonte Hailes, Lonkerria McCoy, Chequira Bonner, Tyesha Bland, Shaterria McKines, Raven Jones, Bayleigh Busby, Dyneshia House, Jamiya Moore, Sendreca Howard, Tavyanna Moore, Amber McKenzie, Ariana Robinson, and Coach Gina Skelton; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a dream season by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Quitman High School "Lady Panthers" Girls Basketball Team and Coach Gina Skelton for capturing their first State Championship, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Skelton for the team, Quitman Principal Michael McDonald, forwarded to the Quitman School Board, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
