Senate Concurrent Resolution 618

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION EXTENDING THE CONDOLENCES OF THE LEGISLATURE TO THE BEREAVED FAMILY OF COAHOMA COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION PRESIDENT AND FORMER JONESTOWN MAYOR PATRICK CAMPBELL AND COMMENDING HIS LIFE OF PUBLIC SERVICE.

     WHEREAS, Patrick Campbell, 48, who led a life of public service in Coahoma County, passed away on February 26, 2019; and

     WHEREAS, Patrick Campbell was currently serving as the Coahoma County Board of Education President at the time of his death and was the former Jonestown Mayor.  He was last elected to the school board for a six-year term in 2016.  The school board will appoint a replacement to finish the term until a special election is held.  Patrick was an Educator in the Clarksdale Municipal School District for 14 years and served two years at Ray Brooks School, Benoit, Mississippi.  His most recent employment was at the Mississippi Department of Motor Vehicle Driver Services; and

     WHEREAS, current Jonestown Mayor Kenny Lester succeeded Campbell in 2017 when he did not run for reelection.  "With a lot of planning, we, as a city, will honor him," Lester said.  "We will give honor to a great person and former Mayor"; and     WHEREAS, Jonestown Police Chief Rico Smith was originally hired by Campbell during his tenure as Mayor.  Smith is also a school board member, where he served with Campbell for four years.  "You will not find a guy who was more passionate about education and children.  Big shoes to be filled," Smith said.  "The Coahoma County School District has suffered a big loss"; and

     WHEREAS, Derrell Washington serves on the Coahoma County Board of Supervisors, and as Mayor, Campbell hired Washington to oversee maintenance in 2004, and then promoted him to Police Officer in 2006.  "That was my first Police job under Patrick Campbell in the Town of Jonestown," Washington said.  "He's going to be missed.  He had a heart for children and worked hard to see the kids in the area succeed"; and

     WHEREAS, Patrick leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Tonya Galmore Campbell, and four children:  George Weaver, Patrick, JaKedrick and JaTerrick Campbell; and

     WHEREAS, we pay tribute and cherish fondly the memory of this most public-spirited citizen of the Mississippi Delta whose enormous civic energy will be missed:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby extend the condolences of the Mississippi Legislature to the bereaved family of Coahoma County Board of Education President and former Jonestown Mayor Patrick Campbell and commend his life of public service.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Patrick Campbell, forwarded to the Coahoma County Board of Education, Board of Supervisors and the Mayor of Jonestown, Mississippi, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
