A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO HONOR THE SACRIFICE MADE BY CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT AND MISSISSIPPI NATIVE LANCE CORPORAL KYLE CARPENTER OF THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS, SERIOUSLY WOUNDED WHILE SERVING A TOUR OF MILITARY DUTY IN AFGHANISTAN, AND TO EXPRESS TO THIS COURAGEOUS SERVICEMAN THE DEEPEST APPRECIATION OF A GRATEFUL STATE AND NATION.

     WHEREAS, a Mississippi native will become the third Marine to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor since the beginning of the War on Terror.  Corporal William Kyle Carpenter will receive the Medal of Honor for covering a grenade with his body to save fellow Marine Lance Corporal Nick Eufrazio; and

     WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter of the United States Marine Corps stands high among those servicemen and women so honored by their country; and

     WHEREAS, as a committed serviceman, Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter answered the call of his country and left his family and home to serve in Afghanistan as a part of the War on Terror.  Kyle was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on October 17, 1989.  He enlisted in the Marine Corps' Delayed Entry Program in February 2009, and completed Recruit Training in March 2009 at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina.  After completing his initial training at the School of Infantry at Camp Geiger, North Carolina, Private First Class Kyle Carpenter was assigned to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, 6th Marine Regiment, where he served as a Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) Gunner from September 2009 to November 2010.  In July 2010, Lance Corporal Carpenter deployed to Marjah, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; and

     WHEREAS, on November 21, 2010, while serving in Afghanistan, Lance Corporal Carpenter took the full blast from an enemy hand grenade in seeking to save a fellow Marine.  He suffered catastrophic wounds for the cause of freedom, losing the sight of his right eye and suffering other injuries that require extensive surgeries and rehabilitation; and

     WHEREAS, he has shown himself worthy of the name "U.S. Marine" no less on the battlefield than in the valiant manner in which he has fought the fight toward recovery from his injuries; and

     WHEREAS, there is no greater or more courageous sacrifice a man can make than to risk his life for a noble cause, as Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter has done, and to honor his valor, Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter was presented with the Purple Heart in December 2010; and

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi Legislature counts it a great privilege to recognize Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter with one voice, pray for his swift and complete recovery, and offer their grateful thanks to Almighty God for the service and sacrifice of this heroic son of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That the members of the Mississippi Legislature, by this resolution, honor the sacrifice made by Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and Mississippi native Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter of the United States Marine Corps, seriously wounded while serving a tour of military duty in Afghanistan, and express to this courageous serviceman the deepest appreciation of a grateful state and nation.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the members of the Mississippi Legislature, on behalf of all Mississippians, acknowledge with deep appreciation the great sacrifice that the men and women of the United States Armed Forces make for the ideals of freedom and justice, which are so richly enjoyed in this nation.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter and made available to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
