MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE
2010 Regular Session

By: Senator(s) Baria, Butler
Senate Concurrent Resolution 613
(As Adopted by Senate and House)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE OUR LADY ACADEMY "CRESCENTS" SOCCER TEAM FROM BAY ST. LOUIS, MISSISSIPPI, FOR WINNING THE M.A.I.S. GIRLS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, our Lady Academy "Crescents" Soccer Team turned in a dominating performance, shutting out Madison St. Joseph 4-0 on February 5, 2010, to win the M.A.I.S. Girls 1A/2A/3A State Soccer Championship game. Mischa Tice provided the assist on the first goal, then added the second goal at the 18:35 mark and OLA (17-4) took a 2-0 lead into halftime; and
WHEREAS, with 4:09 left in the game, OLA Coach Christy Elias received the traditional ice water bath on the sideline, marking the Crescents' eighth state soccer title and the fourth with Elias as the Head Coach. "It never felt so good to get so wet on such a cold night," Elias said. "I always tell the girls to set the tone early in the game and we did"; and
WHEREAS, high-scoring Ashley Libys, who barely missed a goal midway in the first half, found the net with 21:41 left in the game. Then Ashleigh Hoda finished off the scoring by connecting on a penalty kick with 7:58 remaining; and
WHEREAS, the Our Lady Academy Crescents (16-4) claimed the South State Soccer Championship on February 2, 2010, which punched their ticket to Clinton for the state soccer finals against the North State Champions. OLA defeated St. Andrews 4-0 for the Class 1A/2A/3A South State Championship between the walls at the Brother Phillip Memorial Athletic Complex. The win put the Crescents in their 10th consecutive State Championship game; and
WHEREAS, the Crescents have won 16 division titles, including 13 consecutive, and is the only South team to play in the 1A/2A/3A title game in this millennium. OLA has won seven state soccer titles, including six straight from 2000-2005 and 2007. They have been the state runner-up in 2006 and 2008-2009. The win against St. Andrews in the regional exacted some revenge for the Crescents as the Lady Saints had defeated OLA the last two years for the state title; and
WHEREAS, the OLA 2009-2010 Crescents team's roster is: Senior: Mischa Tice; Juniors: Ashley Libys, Emily Sramek, Erin Gibson, Saiva Baker and Vicki Nixon; Sophomores: Ashleigh Hoda, Blake Stefano, Christy Parnell, Colleen Rafferty, Mattison Scardino and Meg Artigues; Freshmen: Anna Taconi, Jenny Byrne, Maddie Casey, Mara Baker and Savannah Lacoste; 8th Graders: Ashlyn Fletcher, Cordy Hotard, Lyndsey Lee, Maycee Scardino and Shelby McConnell; and 7th Graders: Emma Holland, Liza Rittiner, Sarah Rimmer and Tiffany Jones; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this unique achievement from a talented group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Our Lady Academy "Crescents" Soccer Team and Coach Christy Elias from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, for winning the M.A.I.S. Girls State Championship, and extend to the team, coaches, parents, sponsors and staff our best wishes for future successes.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Elias and Principal Sue Goggins for the team and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
