A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING ARMANI LEWIS ON BEING SELECTED AS THE 2015 STATE GAMES OF MISSISSIPPI AT&T MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR.
WHEREAS, based on the national program, the State Games of Mississippi established the annual "Athlete of the Year" Award to recognize Mississippi's amateur athletes. Coaches, officials, athletes, volunteers and spectators nominated one male and one female athlete from each of the 37 sports for the award. The nominated athletes personify the ideals of the State Games movement, such as participation, sportsmanship, special attributes, achievements, efforts and positive attitudes; and
WHEREAS, Armani Lewis is a senior at Clinton High School and, although baseball is his first love, he is a two-sport athlete at Clinton High School. He is a three-year starter at third base for the Arrow Varsity Baseball Team and a three-year starting cornerback on the defensive side for the Clinton High School Football Team; and
WHEREAS, Armani developed his love of sports from his dad, who was his first coach in T-ball, basketball and football. As a child he loved to play ball, any kind of ball would do. His first toy was not a stuffed teddy bear but rather a stuffed football; and
WHEREAS, when asked who inspired him to play sports, his answer is always quick and easy: "My dad. I can't thank God enough for my dad and what he means to me. My dad knows what it takes to be able to move your game to the next level. He has often told me the story of how he entered college on an academic scholarship and walked onto the football field and, through hard work and dedication, he became an NFL cornerback for five-time Superbowl Champions, the San Francisco 49er's"; and
WHEREAS, Armani has led his baseball team from the offensive side of the plate. He captured the title of Offensive Player of the Year in 2012, 2013 and 2015. He also received the Most Valuable Player Award in 2013 and Rookie of the Year in 2014; and
WHEREAS, not only has Armani led the Clinton Arrow Baseball Program, he has also led his district and the State of Mississippi in baseball. He was selected for the All-State District 4-6/A Team. Armani was also selected for All-Star Baseball for the State Games of Mississippi in 2014 and 2015. His 2015 District 6 Team won the Overall State Games Championship. Armani was selected as one of the Top 20 Juniors in the state and was invited to play in the prestigious Junior Sunbelt Classic held in McAlester, Oklahoma. Armani was also selected for the Mississippi Elite Underclassmen Showcase presented by BSN Sports to showcase his skills to college and pro scouts; and
WHEREAS, from these 37 athletes, only two are chosen to receive the honor of "Athlete of the Year." The State Games keeps its entry fees low primarily through the generous donations of sponsors, including Founding Gold Sponsor: Meridian Coca-Cola Bottling Company and Rush Hospital; and Gold Sponsors: AT&T, Maples Gas, City of Meridian, McDonald's, Meridian-Lauderdale County Tourism Bureau/Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors, Structural Steel, WTOK-TV and WMDN/WGBC-TV. The chosen "Athletes of the Year" will visit the State Capitol in Jackson, where the Governor will bestow them with a recognition of their achievement and they will have the honor and fame of lighting the torch at the 2015 Opening Ceremonies of the State Games; and
WHEREAS, Armani Lewis is an excellent role model for a balanced and healthy lifestyle. He is the perfect example of fitness and dedication that the State Games of Mississippi promotes; and
WHEREAS, the State Games of Mississippi is proud to have Armani Lewis as its "Male Athlete of the Year," and it is with great pride that we recognize this young Mississippi athlete who has brought honor to his community and state:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Armani Lewis on being selected as the 2015 State Games of Mississippi AT&T Male Athlete of the Year and express best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Armani Lewis and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
