Senate Concurrent Resolution 601

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE STRINGER HIGH SCHOOL "RED DEVILS" FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH BUBBA BRANNAN FOR WINNING THE MHSAA CLASS 1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the Class 1A Title Game between South State Champions Stringer and North State Champions French Camp was arguably one of the best battles of the Mississippi High School Activities Association Football Championships.  In the end, Stringer held on for a 20-17 win; and

WHEREAS, an easy win for the Red Devils in the 1A State Championship Football game would have been easier on the nerves of fans in the stands, but an easy win would not have allowed players to step up in ways that made them high school gridiron legends; and

WHEREAS, at halftime, the Red Devils received a pep talk from Head Coach Marlan "Bubba" Brannan about fighting back against French Camp's incredibly physical team.  The Red Devils came out in the second half with something to prove, and they did.  Tevin Moore showed the Panther's what most teams have been very familiar with all season:  the back of his jersey, when he raced 51 yards for a touchdown.  With less than 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Moore scooted 19 yards into the end zone again, making the score 20-17.  The Red Devils finished with a really good defense; and

WHEREAS, over the weekend, Moore was named Player of the Year by Mississippi Scoreboard.  He finished the year with 2,256 yards and 41 touchdowns.  Seniors who have led by action and encouragement are defensive power-house Blake Windham, speedy Anthony Moore, all-purpose Lazarius Jones, the bruiser Mason Parker, and unsung hard-workers Dj Jernigan, Jason Sumrall and Zach Russell; and

WHEREAS, the last State Championship for the Red Devils Football Team was in 1992, the end of a 3-year streak.  Brannan played on two of those teams.  In the past few years, Stringer High School has brought home State Titles in band, cheerleading and football, along with recently winning the Jones County Junior College Math Bowl last month.  We guess it's pretty safe to say:  It's good to be a Red Devil; and

WHEREAS, the 2012 Red Devils Football Team Roster is:  Anthony Moore, Reece Stringer, Devyn Stringer, Daylan Dyess, Reagan Holifield, Brett Welborn, Lazarius Jones, Mason Avary, Tevin Moore, Kelvin Tatum, Qwavyious Gandy, Cade Hinton, Anfernee Moore, Robby Fall, Zack Tew, Mason Parker, Hunter Rogers, Jonathan Perdue, Zack Alridge, Tristan Burger, Lorenzo Crosby, Dj Jernigan, Will Hill, Will Knotts, Anthony Hill, Taylor Sprouse, Blake Windham, Jacob Peacock, Thomas Eason, Bridges Johnson, Justin Logan, Joey Lofton, Jason Sumrall, Dameion Johnson and Zach Russell; Head Coach Marlon Brannan; and Assistant Coaches:  Dan Brady, Jody Rowell and Wade Weathers; and

WHEREAS, it is with pride that we recognize this team of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Stringer High School "Red Devils" Football Team and Head Coach Marlan "Bubba" Brannan for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 1A State Championship, the team's fourth 1A State Championship Title, and extend our best wishes to the players, coaches, parents and sponsors for future successes.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Brannon and Principal Jon Will for the team, forwarded to the Jasper County Board of Education and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
