Senate Concurrent Resolution 591

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE FOREST HILL HIGH SCHOOL "LADY PATRIOTS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH TANGELA BANKS FOR WINNING THEIR SECOND CONSECUTIVE MHSAA CLASS 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, Coach Tangela Banks' Forest Hill Lady Patriots Team outlasted Southaven 76-74 in the Class 6A Girls State Championship Game on March 9, 2013, at the Mississippi Coliseum, delivering the school's second consecutive State Title (the 2012 Championship was Forest Hill's first State Title in 46 years); and

WHEREAS, at the conclusion of a seemingly never-ending four-overtime classic championship game, there was exhaustion, tears, and on the winning side, exuberance.  Forest Hill's girls title game won't be forgotten anytime soon.  The incredible overtime win gave Forest Hill its second consecutive 6A Championship; and

WHEREAS, "This is very special," said Forest Hill Coach Tangela Banks.  "Going to four overtimes is amazing.  To have enough gas to pull it off — you can't ask for anything else"; and

WHEREAS, the two teams, which started No. 1 and No. 2 in the preseason The Clarion-Ledger Super 10, threw haymaker after haymaker at each other, yet neither blinked.  One team seemed to have the game locked up in each overtime, only to somehow fumble away the lead to send it into another period; and

WHEREAS, at the end, Forest Hill (30-3) players ran to the locker room dancing in celebration of the draining win.  The girls were ecstatic, but a long night of celebrating the title wasn't in their sights.  "We are all tired," said Banks, who had never coached a four-overtime game; and

WHEREAS, the victory was the second in a Gold Ball Championship Trifecta for the Jackson Public Schools, where Athletic Director Clint Johnson saw a banner Hoops Day for the Jackson School District (Callaway Class 5A Boys, Forest Hill 6A Girls, Murrah Class 6A Boys); and

WHEREAS, the 2012-2013 Lady Patriots Girls Basketball Team Roster is as follows:   Keirra White, G; Brianna Nash, G; Alexia Deans, F; Claresa Banks, G; Alexis Collins, G; Alexus Knight, G; Patrice Banks, G; Debony Wilson, F; Vanessa Bridges, G; Adriana James, G,F; Anissa Jackson, G; Breauna Smith, SF; Jasmine Pitchford, G; Essence Pulliam, F; and Wilson Tiyara, SF; and Coach Tangela Banks; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this special achievement by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the 2012-2013 Forest Hill High School "Lady Patriots" Girls Basketball Team and Head Coach Tangela Banks for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A State Championship, the school's second consecutive State Title, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future academic and athletic success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Banks and Principal Kimberly Warfield for the team, forwarded to the Jackson School Board, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
