Senate Concurrent Resolution 583

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE NATCHEZ CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL "GREEN WAVE" BOYS VARSITY CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM AND COACH TOMMY SMITH FOR WINNING THEIR THIRD-STRAIGHT CLASS AAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, the Cathedral High School Green Wave Boys Varsity Cross-Country Team won the Overall MAIS AAA State Championship for the third consecutive year.  The Junior Varsity Cross-Country Boys Team won the first-ever Overall Championship.  Ryan Skates won First Place in the meet with a time of 17:22; and

WHEREAS, Cathedral Cross-Country Head Coach Tommy Smith knew the capabilities of his boys varsity and junior varsity teams.  His best runners had been running consistently at the top for most of the season.  The week before the AAA State Championship at Mississippi College Choctaw Trail in Clinton, the two teams finished in First Place during Cathedral's Invitational Meet.  They competed against Presbyterian Christian School, Jackson Academy, Jackson Prep and Madison-Ridgeland Academy.  Some of the schools are twice as big as Natchez Cathedral; and

WHEREAS, on the varsity side, Cathedral finished with a score of 40 points, beating out Second-Place Silliman Academy, who scored 86 points.  "We put seven men in the Top 17," said Coach Smith; and

WHEREAS, Coach Smith said he is proud of his runners and the work they put into making the Championship happen and building a winning program.  The win was probably the most inspirational event for those young guys, and it will be instrumental in building a productive program; and

WHEREAS, members of the team include:  Jackson Harper, John Carter Austin, Barrett Burget, Joseph Garrity, Hayes Marchbanks, Logan Ellis, Mickey Hartley, Grayson Guedon, Searcy Branton, Cameron Verser, Zach Mann, Hartley Pyron, Cade Miller, Ryan Skates, Will Vaughan, Hayes Daly, Cade Eidt and Liam Blackburn; and Coach Tommy Smith; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this special group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Natchez Cathedral High School Green Wave Boys Varsity Cross-Country Team and Coach Tommy Smith for winning their third-straight Class AAA State Championship, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Tommy Smith and Natchez Cathedral High School Headmaster Norman Yvon, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of Natchez Cathedral High School, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
