A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING AUBURN FOOTBALL LINEBACKER AND OLIVE BRANCH HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNUS DAREN BATES FOR HIS PARTICIPATION IN THE BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.

     WHEREAS, the 2010 SEC Champion Auburn "Tigers" Football Team won a 22-19 victory over Oregon in the BCS National Championship at University of Phoenix Stadium on January 10, 2011.  It was Auburn's second national title in history and ninth comeback win in 14 games this season; and

     WHEREAS, in game billed a battle of two high octane offenses, it was the defense by both teams that set the tone for the game.  An important member of the Auburn defense was sophomore linebacker Daren Bates, a graduate and star football player from Olive Branch High School who made a solo tackle in the National Championship Game; and

     WHEREAS, Daren's statistics are as follows:

     ·  2010 - Appeared in 12 games with nine starts, 8th on team with 48 tackles; made first collegiate start at linebacker in season opener vs. Arkansas State and led Tigers in tackles with a career-best of 10, seven of the 10 tackles were solo; against Mississippi State, totaled three solo tackles; against Clemson, had one QB hurry to go with five total tackles, three solo; against South Carolina, forced first career fumble, which led to Auburn go-ahead touchdown in 4th quarter, had a QB hurry, one TFL (minus 1 yard) and five total tackles; in limited action vs. ULM, recorded one assisted tackle with one QB hurry; against Kentucky, finished second on team with eight tackles, including six solo stops; also forced a fumble in second quarter that led to Auburn field goal; totaled three tackles, two solo, vs. Arkansas; against LSU, registered five tackles with one QB hurry before leaving game with injury in the second quarter; did not play vs. Ole Miss due to injury, breaking streak of 21 consecutive starts since 2009 freshmen season; against Georgia, had one solo tackle with a QB hurry; played vs. Alabama but did not have a tackle; in SEC Championship Game vs. South Carolina, finished with third-most tackles with six and had an interception which halted a Gamecocks' scoring threat at the Auburn 24-yard line; against Oregon in BCS National Championship Game, tallied one solo tackle;

     ·  2009 - Ranked T-39th in SEC in tackles per game, 5.4 tpg; started all 13 games; totaled 70 tackles with 2.5 TFLs and one fumble recovery; started at safety in season opener vs. Louisiana Tech; recorded Auburn's only interception of the game, making a leaping grab at the Auburn 2-yard line to halt a Tech scoring threat; had three assisted tackles and two QB hurries in SEC opener vs. Mississippi State; totaled four solo tackles vs. West Virginia; led Tigers with seven tackles vs. Ball State; also registered half a sack (minus 12 yards) and 1.5 TFL's (minus 14 yards) vs. Ball State; tied career high with seven tackles against Tennessee, six of his seven stops vs. the Vols were solo; had six tackles, with five solo, against Arkansas; against Kentucky, set season-high with eight tackles with six solo stops; had a QB hurry to go with four assisted tackles vs. LSU; against Ole Miss, tied for team lead with nine tackles, also recovered a fumble and broke up one pass vs. Rebels; in limited action vs. Furman, totaled two tackles, both solo; finished with three tackles vs. Georgia; finished with seven tackles, five solo, including a TFL (minus 5 yards) vs. Alabama; in Outback Bowl vs. Northwestern, recorded seven tackles, including six solo stops, with one pass break-up;

     ·  HIGH SCHOOL - played for High School Coach Scott Samsel; collected 90 tackles and four interceptions and had nearly 900 yards of total offense as a senior; named to the MHSAA All-Region 1 Class 5A team; selected for The Commercial Appeal Shelby Metro All-Suburban team; named the BankPlus Player of the Week by the DeSoto Times following a 49-22 victory over Horn Lake in which he had 107 total yards and three touchdowns, 10 tackles and an interception; and

     WHEREAS, Daren is the son of Michael and Weslynn Bates; and it is with great pride that we recognize an outstanding Mississippi football player who has brought honor to his school, his home community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Auburn University "Tiger" Football Linebacker and Olive Branch High School Alumnus Daren Bates from Olive Branch, Mississippi, for his participation and membership on the 2010 BCS National Championship Team and extend our best wishes to Daren and his family on this auspicious occasion.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Daren Bates, forwarded to Auburn Coach Gene Chizik and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
