A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING TITO ECHIBURU OF MORTON, MISSISSIPPI, UPON HIS INDUCTION INTO THE 2009 MISSISSIPPI TENNIS ASSOCIATION HALL OF FAME.

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi Tennis Association (MTA) has announced the 2009 Hall of Fame inductees and the annual tennis award winners which included tennis star Tito Echiburu of Morton, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, the Hall of Fame inductees are nominated by their peers and selected by the Tennis Foundation of Mississippi and the annual award winners are nominated by their peers and selected by the MTA's awards committee.  Just to be nominated for either category is quite an honor and to be selected is a very prestigious honor.  The MTA Awards were held on January 9, 2010; and

     WHEREAS, Tito Echiburu played on the Mississippi State University (MSU) Men's Tennis Team.  He was a member of the first team that was invited to play in the NCAA National Championship in 1965.  MSU won the Southeastern Conference that year and Tito was one of four players chosen to represent MSU at the championships which were held at UCLA; and

     WHEREAS, Echiburu went on to have a stellar career at MSU and in 1987, he was inducted into the Mississippi State Athletic Hall of Fame; and

     WHEREAS, Tito played for many years and amassed quite a record.  From 1966-1990 he held various Mississippi and Southern rankings.  John Rogers and Hugh Thompson were his doubles partners and he also played mixed doubles with Sandra Dabbs Rogers (also a member of the Hall of Fame).  In 1974 they achieved the No. 1 Open Mixed Doubles Mississippi ranking; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we acknowledge the record of this Mississippi athlete who has brought honor to his university, his community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Tito Echiburu of Morton, Mississippi, upon his induction into the 2009 Mississippi Tennis Association Hall of Fame and extend our best wishes to him, his family and his fellow tennis Hall of Fame inductees on this auspicious occasion.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Tito Echiburu, forwarded to the Mississippi Tennis Association and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
