A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE PORTER'S CHAPEL ACADEMY "EAGLES" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH E.J. CREEL FOR WINNING ITS FIRST MAIS CLASS A TITLE IN SCHOOL HISTORY AND FOR THEIR EXCELLENT 2012-2013 SEASON.

     WHEREAS, on February 23, 2013, the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) Class A Championship Game, Porter's Chapel Academy "Eagles" Boys Basketball Team and CENLA Christian Academy did the basketball equivalent of going 12 rounds in the ring.  There were 17 lead changes, a loud capacity crowd and momentum swings that waxed and waned; and

     WHEREAS, in the end, it was underdog Porter's Chapel who came out on top, winning the Class A Title with a 74-72 victory in overtime.  It was the first title in school history for the boys, who finished 26-4.  The girls won titles in 1988 and 1990; and

     WHEREAS, in the MAIS Overall Tournament, Ted Brisco led 1A Champ Porter's Chapel Academy with 18 points in a close loss to Parklane Academy, where Porter's Chapel Academy rallied to cut the lead to one with 13 seconds remaining; and

     WHEREAS, Coach E.J. Creel and his assistants are to be congratulated for leading this team through an excellent 2012-2013 schedule; and

     WHEREAS, the 2012-2013 Eagles Basketball Team Roster is:  Peter Harris; Peyton Guider; Zac Morgan; Taylor Rushing; P.J. Lassiter; Dalton Downs; Ben Summerlin; Jordan Locke; Ben Harper; Ted Brisco; Wes Allison; Jonathan Lynn; Justin McDaniel; Devin Johnson; Josh Masterson; Jonah Masterson; and Tree Carter; Coach E.J. Creel; Assistant Coaches:  Chris Busby and Edgar Cain; and Scorebook Keeper Sheryl Ross; and

     WHEREAS, Porter's Chapel Academy strives for excellence in all aspects of athletics.  This academy believes and teaches that hard work and dedication are imperative in obtaining any goal.  This academy develops character by teaching Christian living in every area of life, even on the athletic field; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this first-ever achievement by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Porter's Chapel Academy "Eagles" Boys Basketball Team and Coach E.J. Creel for winning its first Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class A State Championship and for their excellent 2012-2013 season, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future athletic and academic success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Creel and Headmaster Pam Wilbanks, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
