A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE DESOTO CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL "LADY JAGS" FAST-PITCH SOFTBALL TEAM AND COACH PHYLLIS HICKS FOR WINNING ITS FIRST-EVER MHSAA CLASS 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, a State Championship trophy in high school fast-pitch softball now resides at 2911 Central Parkway in Southaven, returned from the University of Southern Mississippi after the DeSoto Central Lady Jags finished off a two-game sweep of Harrison Central to win the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) 6A Title on May 11, 2018; and
WHEREAS, DeSoto Central's Haylee Alberson drove in a pair of runs to help spark the Lady Jags' attack to a 4-1 victory over Harrison Central in the first of a best-of-three series at Southern Miss. DeSoto Central scored once in the sixth to tie the game and then broke it open with three runs in the seventh inning to claim the first contest of the series. Winning Pitcher Sterling James allowed just two hits in the game-one victory and struck out eight. James returned to the circle the next game, struck out nine and again allowed just two hits over five-plus innings in the title-clinching 3-1 victory over the Rebelettes. DeSoto Central scored what would be the game-winning runs in the third inning for a 2-1 lead and added an insurance score in the sixth to clinch the crown; and
WHEREAS, Coach Phyllis Hicks, in her 15th year leading the DeSoto Central program, challenged her team to play championship-caliber softball in the final round and her team responded in kind. It was the first-ever State Title for DeSoto Central in fast-pitch softball. "We made the routine plays and we made some exceptional plays," Coach Hicks said. "They contributed in every area. Everybody was just doing their job and that's what it takes to win a Championship"; and
WHEREAS, the 2018 Championship Lady Jags Fast-Pitch Softball Team Roster is: Haylee Alberson, Kaitlyn Bednarek, Mon'Timmia Brooks, Holly Carrington, Marisa Ceide, Arin Dale, Ozrah Davis, Brooklyn Farmer, Molly Beth Ferguson, Sterling James, Kristian Jones, Danielle Joyner, Morgan Langley, Mollie Mays, Anna Rae Mays, Ellis Meine, Mattie Meine, Mattie Melton, Callie Newman, Gracie Parsons, Hannah Randl, Bailey Smith, Raegan Stafford, Megan Vinson, Savannah Wilbanks and Darby Williams; Head Coach Phyllis Hicks and Assistant Coach James Speck; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this special group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the DeSoto Central High School "Lady Jags" Fast-Pitch Softball Team and Coach Phyllis Hicks for winning its first-ever Class 6A State Title, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for continued success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Phyllis Hicks for the team, forwarded to DeSoto Central High School Principal Cliff Johnston and the DeSoto County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
