Senate Concurrent Resolution 573

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE LAKE HIGH SCHOOL "LADY HORNETS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH MAURICE BOWIE FOR WINNING THE 2022 MHSAA 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, it has been 21 years since the Lake Hornets have brought the State Championship Trophy home.  The last time the Lake Hornets won a State Championship was in 2001; and

WHEREAS, during the 2022 Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) 2A Girls State Championship, the "Lady Hornets" would have to battle from the beginning.  The March 4, 2022, Championship Game never got above a five-point lead for either team; and

WHEREAS, at the half, Lake led 27-26.  Last year Belmont was the 3A Girls Basketball State Champions but dropped down to 2A this season.  Lake knew they had a test in front of them.  The underdog on this big stage, Lake held a one-point lead with a minute left on the clock.  With 10.1 seconds left to play, Lake headed to the free-throw line to shoot two.  Tra'Shaylah Wilson sank one and gave the Hornets a two-point lead that would be enough to close the game out and give Lake the Gold Trophy.  The Lady Hornets took down Belmont 46-44; and

WHEREAS, D'Nara Barton was named the game's "Most Valuable Player" with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds; and

WHEREAS, the 2021-2022 Lady Hornets Championship Roster is:  T'Lea Hunt, Emonti Earnest, Tra'Shaylah Wilson, Alicia Oliphant, Laneisha Palm, Kelis Odom, Antwonette Pinkston, Taylor Clark, Brooklyn Harris, D'Nara Barton, Aniya Hunt, Lyric Lay and Kaliauna Jones; Head Coach Maurice Bowie, Assistant Coaches Krista Donald and Shuntequa Lofton, Athletic Director Tate Hanna, and Managers, Denetria Lay, Kenya Banks and Aeranna Coleman; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Lake High School "Lady Hornets" Girls Basketball Team and Coach Maurice Bowie for winning the 2022 MHSAA 2A State Championship and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for continued success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Maurice Bowie for the team and Lake High School Principal Joel McCarty, forwarded to the Scott County Board of Education and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
