A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THE CENTER FOR VIOLENCE PREVENTION IN PEARL, MISSISSIPPI, ON THE OCCASION OF ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY AS A COMMITTED DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROGRAM IN OUR STATE.

     WHEREAS, The Center for Violence Prevention in Pearl, Mississippi, has been in operation since 1990.  Through its partnership with multiple community organizations and a committed staff focused on the needs of the domestic violence client, The Center for Violence Prevention advocates that every person has the right to a life free from violence.  It serves 10 counties in Central Mississippi:  Claiborne, Copiah, Hinds, Issaquena, Madison, Rankin, Sharkey, Simpson, Warren and Yazoo; and

     WHEREAS, The Center for Violence Prevention Program includes the following:

     ·  Victim Services:  The Center's victim service programs are designed to foster successful rehabilitation from violent and abusive relationships so that victims can take back control of their lives and learn to live independently, free from abuse;

     ·  Batterer Intervention Program:  This program works to ensure the safety of the partners of group participants while working to end domestic abuse by creating a culture of deterrence, collaborating with the justice system and other service providers, and teaching offenders alternatives to coercive, controlling and abusive behaviors in intimate relationships;

     ·  Crisis and Referral Line:  The Center for Violence Prevention has a 24-hour crisis and referral line to assist in immediate needs.  Trained personnel will provide a wide range of references and resources.  Call 1-800-266-4198 or 601-932-4198 in Central Mississippi;

     ·  Temporary Shelter:  The Center provides a homelike setting designed to assist families that are in need of a safe environment.  Services are in place to help these individuals begin a productive life, independent of abusive relationships;

     ·  Counseling:  Individual, family and group counseling is provided by professionals.  Outpatient counseling is provided to the community on a sliding fee scale;

     ·  Workshops:  The Center for Violence Prevention will provide education on domestic violence and related issues to interested organizations and community groups free of charge;

     ·  Day Care:  A safe day care is provided for the children of mothers who are in shelter services.  This service allows the women to work or continue their education;

     ·  Second Chance:  A place to bring merchandise you no longer can use.  The merchandise is given to the shelter clients or sold in our retail store with all proceeds going directly to client services; and

     WHEREAS, The Center is staffed with highly-trained professionals and was recently honored by the FBI with the 2014 Director's Community Leadership Award.  It partners with multiple national and local law enforcement agencies and other community partners, and trains law enforcement, judicial and medical personnel, and other partner agencies.  The Center is also involved through leadership on legislative and other governmental issues.  The Center is funded through federal and state grants, private foundations, businesses, civic organizations, churches and individuals who believe everyone has the right to violence-free living; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we salute The Center for Violence Prevention's Board of Directors and Advisory Board Members for providing a critical need to the citizens of Central Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and commend The Center for Violence Prevention in Pearl, Mississippi, on the occasion of its 25th Anniversary as a committed domestic violence program in our state, and extend our best wishes to the Staff and Board of Directors of this exemplary organization on this auspicious occasion.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Executive Director Sandy Middleton for The Center for Violence Prevention and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
