Senate Concurrent Resolution 569

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE LAFAYETTE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL LADY 'DORES SOCCER TEAM AND HEAD COACH MELINDA SCRUGGS FOR WINNING THE SCHOOL'S FIRST STATE SOCCER TITLE.

WHEREAS, it took all of regulation, overtime, sudden death and a winning goal from an unlikely source during penalty kicks.  In the end, the Lafayette County High School Girls Soccer Team capped its historic postseason run with a 3-1 victory by way of penalty kicks over Northeast Jones to claim the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A State Championship, the first in program history, on February 7, 2015, at the Madison Central High School campus.  The match finished in a three-all tie in regulation; and

WHEREAS, from opening whistle, it was a physical match as the stakes were high, which allowed for a higher tolerance of stiff defense from both teams by the officials.  Lafayette (18-4) was the aggressor for the majority of the first half as the Commodores kept pressure on Northeast Jones' side of the field, which provided multiple scoring chances.  The Commodores finally found the back of the net when Maddy Houghton scored from about 20 yards out as the ball bounced past the stretched-out Tigers' goalkeeper at the 19-minute mark.  Northeast Jones tied the match at 1 at the 40-minute mark just seconds before halftime.  The Tigers used that momentum to take their first lead of the match when they broke the tie eight minutes into the second half.  Their lead was short-lived as Lafayette's Alley Houghton tied the match for a second time with a goal.  The Commodores and Tigers traded goals one more time.  The 3-3 score held for the final 17 minutes as well as the two 10-minute overtime periods and two sudden death periods; and

WHEREAS, Houghton and the rest of her team got a second chance as the match came down to penalty kicks to decide who would leave Madison as the 4A Champ.  With Lafayette up 2-1, all the Commodores needed was one more goal, and the trophy was going home with them to Oxford.  Freshman Emma Wilson became the hero for Lafayette as she scored the winning goal to claim the Championship for her team; and

WHEREAS, the win culminated a run that started when Lafayette started an eight-game winning streak that started during Division 3-4A play.  The Commodores went a perfect 4-0 in the division and followed that up with a perfect run through the playoffs; and

WHEREAS, "These girls have built this program," Coach Scruggs said.  "The sky's the limit for us next year.  Hopefully we will come back next year and win it again"; and

WHEREAS, the 2015 Lady 'Dores roster is:  Marissa Harrison, MF; Alley Houghton, FORW; Madison Lee, D; Lizzie Gardner, FORW; Abbey Pate, FORW; Xhiir Burgess, GK; Nikki Kesler, D; Ana Branch, D; Emma Wilson, MF; Halle Moore, D; Kat Levy, FORW; Kirkland Pruitt, D; Mikayla Patterson, FORW; Jada Ross, D; Maddy Houghton, MF; Alex Long, D; Loura Varner, D; Jamie Williams, GK; Heather Smith, D; Rachel Watkins, D; and Head Coach Melinda Scruggs; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes which has brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Lafayette County High School Lady 'Dores Soccer Team and Head Coach Melinda Scruggs for winning the school's first State Soccer Title, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Scruggs and Principal Patrick Robinson, forwarded to the Lafayette County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
