A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING JOHNNY ATHERTON, VICE PRESIDENT OF MISSISSIPPI POWER COMPANY IN GULFPORT, MISSISSIPPI, AS 2013-2014 CHAIRMAN OF THE MISSISSIPPI MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION.
WHEREAS, Johnny Atherton of Gulfport, Mississippi, has been named the 2013-2014 Chairman of the Mississippi Manufacturers Association Board of Directors. Atherton is Vice President of Corporate Services and Community Relations for Mississippi Power Company in Gulfport; and
WHEREAS, Atherton is responsible for Mississippi Power's environmental and resource strategy, corporate services (includes safety and training, general services, facilities, security and employee relations), and community relations. He is also responsible for supply chain management and information technology. He began working for Mississippi Power in 1985 and has held various leadership positions within the company; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Atherton is a lifelong resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and attended Gulfport High School. Johnny graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing; and
WHEREAS, throughout his career, Atherton has been an active participant in many community and professional organizations along the Gulf Coast and throughout Mississippi. He currently serves as a Board Member of the Gulf Coast Business Council, the University of Southern Mississippi Research Foundation and is a member of the Southern Miss 100 Advocacy Group. He also serves as Commissioner for Harrison County Development Commission and Mississippi Coast Coliseum Commission; and
WHEREAS, Atherton is a graduate of Leadership Gulf Coast and Leadership Mississippi and has been involved in Executive Training Programs at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and Northwestern University's Kellogg School; and
WHEREAS, Atherton is a member of St. James Catholic Church and resides in Gulfport with his wife, Lori, and their two daughters, Anna and Molly; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we pay tribute to this most public spirited citizen of Mississippi whose enormous civic energy is a wonderful example for all in our state:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Johnny Atherton as the 2013-2014 Chairman of the Mississippi Manufacturers Association, and extend our best wishes to Johnny and his family on this high honor.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Johnny Atherton, forwarded to the Executive Director of the Mississippi Manufacturers Association and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
