Senate Concurrent Resolution 538
(As Adopted by Senate and House)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION SUPPORTING INCREASED ACCESS TO WIRELESS BROADBAND IN MISSISSIPPI.
WHEREAS, reliable, affordable high-speed Internet has become a necessity in the information-age economy; and
WHEREAS, many regions of Mississippi remain without reliable, affordable broadband wireless; and
WHEREAS, technology integrating satellite communications with expanded terrestrial wireless broadband networks would increase the reliability, coverage, access and affordability of all types of telecommunications; and
WHEREAS, demand for wireless broadband is expected to dramatically increase over the next four years, and limited spectrum capacity requires more spectrum to become available for wireless broadband and the development of more efficient uses of spectrum; and
WHEREAS, expansion of the use of next generation wireless technology, such as Long Term Evolution, WiMax and advanced HSPA+, would enable Mississippians to more efficiently access increasingly limited spectrum available for wireless broadband use:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That the Legislature urges the United States to expand mobile broadband infrastructure, particularly to underserved and rural regions.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Mississippi Legislature supports private-sector investment in mobile broadband networks that would increase competition, innovation and consumerism while reducing prices.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Mississippi Legislature supports testing the viability of integrating satellite coverage with existing broadband infrastructure to construct a new national mobile broadband network that will bring next-generation service to 260 million Americans.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be transmitted to the Governor, the Mississippi Wireless Communication Commission and the Mississippi Department of Information Technology Services, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
