Senate Concurrent Resolution 534

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS OF ODIS MCCORD, LONGTIME TEACHER, COACH AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AT SOUTHAVEN HIGH SCHOOL.

     WHEREAS, Odis McCord, longtime Teacher, Coach and Athletic Director at Southaven High School, passed away on January 16, 2012; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. McCord spent his entire career in the DeSoto County School District.  Upon graduating from the University of Mississippi in 1969, he accepted his first position at Lake Cormorant Junior High School.  One year later, Mr. McCord was hired at Southaven High School.  He worked until his retirement on December 30, 2011; and

     WHEREAS, he had a love of all sports but especially loved Ole Miss Athletics and Southaven Athletics.  In addition to his work with Southaven Athletics, he began Southaven's Drivers Education Program.  Mr. McCord became Athletic Director in 1976, watching as the Chargers won Mississippi High School Activities Association State Championships in softball, baseball and volleyball; and

     WHEREAS, Southaven High School dedicated its weight room in honor of Mr. McCord.  Previously, Southaven officials named the road that leads to both the baseball field and football stadium, McCord Drive; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. McCord was also a graduate of the Southaven Police Department's VIP Program and was a member of the Carriage Hills Baptist Church and Ole Miss Alumni Association; and

     WHEREAS, Coach McCord is survived by his three brothers:  Ray K. McCord, Frankie K. McCord and Floyd Michael "Mike" McCord; and a host of nieces and nephews; and

     WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of this outstanding educator who was a great role model for his students and will be missed:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss of Odis McCord, longtime Teacher, Coach and Athletic Director at Southaven High School in Southaven, Mississippi, and extend the sympathy of the Legislature to his surviving family on his passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Coach McCord, forwarded to the DeSoto County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
