MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE

2017 Regular Session

To: Rules

By: Senator(s) Seymour, Gollott, Watson, Wiggins, Barnett, Jackson (32nd)

Senate Concurrent Resolution 522

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE ST. MARTIN HIGH SCHOOL LADY "YELLOW JACKETS" GIRLS GOLF TEAM AND HEAD COACH BRANDON LAIRD FOR WINNING THEIR FIRST-EVER STATE CLASS III GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP, WHICH IS THE SECOND TEAM STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN SCHOOL HISTORY.

WHEREAS, the St. Martin High School Girls Golf Team made history on May 3, 2016.  The Lady "Yellow Jackets" captured the Mississippi High School Athletic Association Class III State Golf Championship at The Oaks Country Club in Pass Christian, Mississippi.  It marks the first-ever State Golf Title for St. Martin High School, and is just the second team State Championship in school history in any sport; and

WHEREAS, the Lady "Yellow Jackets" had finished second the past two years in the Overall State Tournament, including falling by one stroke in a playoff to Oak Grove last season.  St. Martin shot an overall 325 in the two-day affair this year to roll past Madison Central by 13 strokes; and

WHEREAS, Seniors Sydney Cato and Jordan Wescovich set the tone for St. Martin High School, as Cato fired an 80 in the first round Monday and a 76 on Tuesday, and Jordan Wescovich shot 82 and 87.  Lindsey Wescovich shot 98 and 92 to complete the St. Martin High School scoring; and

WHEREAS, "I have two seniors who are playing today who have been with me since 7th Grade," St. Martin High School Head Coach Brandon Laird said, referring to Jordan Wescovich and Cato.  "It's a real big step for our program and to see how the girls have improved in golf; it's pretty emotional for us all.  I told them I found the score sheets from their 7th Grade year and seeing the scores that they used to shoot for nine holes and how far they have progressed since then is really something to see."  The Lady Yellow Jackets basically led wire-to-wire, after putting up a team score of 162 on Monday and taking a four-stroke lead over Madison Central after the first round; and

WHEREAS, members of the Yellow Jackets Girls Golf Squad are:  Sydney Cato, 2016 graduate of St. Martin High School and freshman at William Carey College; Jordan Wescovich, 2016 graduate of St. Martin High School and freshman at Ole Miss on a full academic scholarship; and Lindsey Wescovich, 11th Grade at St. Martin High School; and Coach Brandon Laird; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought pride to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the St. Martin High School Lady "Yellow Jackets" Girls Golf Team and Head Coach Brandon Laird for winning their first-ever State Class III Golf Championship, which is the second team State Championship in school history, and extend to the team, their families and their sponsors best wishes for continued success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Brandon Laird, forwarded to St. Martin High School Principal Mrs. Dina Holland, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
