Senate Concurrent Resolution 519

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE PASSING AND COMMENDING THE DEDICATED PUBLIC SERVICE OF FORMER STATE SENATOR JOHN WILLIAM POWELL OF LIBERTY, MISSISSIPPI, AND EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.

WHEREAS, former State Senator and respected cattleman and timber farmer, John William Powell (82) of Liberty, Mississippi, passed away Monday, November 15, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Senator Powell was born March 4, 1928, in Amite County, Mississippi. He was the son of John Wesley and Nan Bond Powell; and

WHEREAS, Senator Powell was a cattleman and timber farmer, Mr. Powell retired as a State Senator after 28 years. He was elected to the Senate in 1960 and retired in 1988. He served Amite, Wilkinson, Pike, Walthall, Adams and Jefferson Counties during his tenure with the Mississippi Senate. He was Chairman of County Affairs for most of his years in the Legislature, and also served on the Finance, Agriculture, Education, Highways and many other committees; and

WHEREAS, he was the first out-of-county resident to be presented the Oliver Emmerich Award in McComb, Mississippi. He was awarded a Lifetime Member of the Presidents Circle and the Foundation Board of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary; and

WHEREAS, he attended Liberty High School and Southwest Mississippi Community College, was a member of the Masonic Lodge and also a member of Liberty Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, Senator Powell loved serving the people of Southwest Mississippi and was a true gentleman and statesman and servant of the people; and

WHEREAS, he is preceded in death by his parents, infant twin sisters and a sister Carolyn Powell. Survivors include his wife Martha Ann Wells Powell, one son, John Wesley Powell. Also the V. Watts family of Livingston, Louisiana, his devoted caretakers Nolan Hardy, Aldrich and Sherry Watts, Charlie and Mildred Taplin, Patsy Robinson and Patricia Tobias, and the employees of Liberty Community Center and Hospice Ministries; and

WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of an old friend, a gentleman and a dedicated servant of the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commend the dedicated public service of former State Senator John William Powell of Liberty, Mississippi, and express to his surviving family our sympathy on his passing and thanks for his service.

BE IT FURTHER RESOVLED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of John William Powell and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
