Senate Concurrent Resolution 515

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE STARKVILLE HIGH SCHOOL "YELLOWJACKETS" FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH JAMIE MITCHELL FOR WINNING THE 2012 MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, Starkville High School "Yellowjackets" Coach Jamie Mitchell made waves when he "guaranteed" a win over Pascagoula in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State Championship.  After a thrilling win over West Point in the semifinals, Mitchell told the Starkville Daily News, "I guarantee you this, we are going to win it"; and

WHEREAS, Coach Mitchell says he wasn't trying to pull a Joe Namath, but his promise proved prophetic:  Starkville (12-3) cruised to a 28-11 win over Pascagoula (12-3) to win the 5A Title at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, December 1, 2012; and

WHEREAS, Starkville quarterback Gabe Myles was a big part of Starkville's success.  The Dandy Dozen quarterback, who has verbally committed to Mississippi State, was 9 for 14 for 82 yards and a touchdown.  He also had 42 rushing yards and two touchdowns.  Myles wasn't the only senior to make a big impact for the Yellowjackets.  Senior defensive back Johnny Smith had three interceptions, Starkville had a total of four, slowing down Pascagoula's talented quarterback Stacey Warren.  Starkville's defense didn't allow a touchdown in the title game and forced Pascagoula to settle for field goals; and

WHEREAS, Coach Mitchell's bold statement was made primarily due to a brutal loss to Picayune in last years' 5A Championship.  He came so close to his first State Championship after 23 years of coaching and wasn't willing to walk away from another appearance on Jackson's biggest stage empty-handed.  Neither were his players, "they've done it all year long," Coach Mitchell said about his defense's effort.  "Game after game after game, they shut out five of our division opponents.  That's why we won this ballgame tonight"; and

WHEREAS, the 2012 Yellowjacket roster is:  Preston Baker, RB; David Fair, LB; Nigil Randle, WR; Gabe Myles, QB, DB; Stanley Higgins, TE, DE; Princeton Jones, WR, DB; Kentrell Spencer, WR; Johnny Smith, DB; Jimmy Saulsberry, WR; Tyler Rogers, LB; Taylor Johnston, LB; Jay Nelson, WR; Antonio Hinton, TE, OL; Caleb Wilson, QB; Marlow Rogers, LB; Devonte Davis, DB; Quavarious Robertson, WR; Matt Fuller, LB, RB; Charlie Henderson, K; Dondre Dailey, DB; Raphael McClain; Jay Henderson, LB; Zontae Bush, LB; Darius Grayer, WR; Jerry Johnson, LB; Deangelo Johnson, DL; Jaquez Horsley, RB; Ladorious Pittman, RB; Deondre Harris, DB; Devin Mitchell, RB, LB; Shytraille Spruell, RB; Jordan Bowlin, LB; Derion Ford, DL, OL; Trey Robinson, LB; Jay Clay, TE; Shyquell Spruell, RB; Mykieale Maniel, DB; Bryan Sharp, RB; LeeEdward Jefferson, LB; Jacoby Smith, DB; TaQuan Goliday, DB; Chris Rogers, LB; Doakaven Townsend, DB; Marquise Brooks, DL; AJ Smith, OL; Kyle Jones; David Duck; Jalen Henderson, OL; Jawon Johnson, OL; Terrel Dailey, DL; Josh Kitchens, OL, DL; Tyler Barnes, OL, LS; Sterling Buckner, OL; Travez Brewer; Brandon Lindsey; Maleke Bell, DL; Chris Thomas, OL; Jacory McCarter, OL; Maurice Reed; Kirk Kinard, OL; Justin Ware; Michael Outlaw, OL; Ladarrius Robinson, OL; Raphael Leonard, WR; Keano Jefferson, DB; Haratio Williams, DB; Isiah Thompson, WR; Josh Rice; Quadirious Larry, WR; Taylor Wise, K, P; Michael Godley, K; Michael Sullivan, K, P; and John Hainsey, K; and

WHEREAS, Gabe Myles' final touchdown made the memories from last year wash away and gave Starkville its first title since 2001.  Finally Myles, Coach Mitchell and the rest of the team could walk away from Jackson with a trophy in hand; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this championship team which has brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Starkville High School "Yellowjackets" Football Team and Head Coach Jamie Mitchell for winning the 2012 Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State Championship, and extend to the coaches, players and sponsors our best wishes for future athletic and academic successes.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Mitchell and Principal Keith Fennell for the team, forwarded to the Starkville School Board and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
