A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS AND COMMENDING THE PUBLIC SERVICE OF CHANCELLOR JAMES H.C. THOMAS, JR., OF HATTIESBURG, MISSISSIPPI, AND EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.

     WHEREAS, longtime Hattiesburg Attorney and Chancellor James H.C. Thomas, Jr., 71, passed away on October 1, 2010.  He was buried in Highland Cemetery with military rites performed by VFW Post 3036 Honor Guard; and

     WHEREAS, Judge Thomas practiced law for 29 years in Hattiesburg and served 16 years as Chancellor of the 10th Chancery Court District.  He was a United States Army Veteran and a member of First Baptist Church of Hattiesburg; and

     WHEREAS, Thomas practiced law in Hattiesburg from 1966-1994 and was a Municipal Judge for Petal from 1974-1978.  Thomas was first elected as Judge in 1994 and started his chancery duties for the 10th Chancery Court District in 1995.  The 10th Chancery Court District includes five counties:  Forrest, Marion, Lamar, Perry and Pearl River; and

     WHEREAS, family and friends remember Honorable Chancery Thomas, Jr., as a man who loved his family and the outdoors.  He enjoyed taking his family to ball games and was active as a grandfather.  His love for the outdoors extended to his loyalty to the Boys Scouts.  He was an Eagle Scout and served in numerous positions from Commissioner to past President of the Pine Burr Area Council of Boy Scouts.  In 2008, the Eagle Scout class was named in his honor; and

     WHEREAS, survivors include his wife, Betty Broadfoot Thomas of Hattiesburg; two sons, James H.C. Thomas III of Phoenix, Arizona, and Stephen K. Thomas of Hattiesburg; two daughters, Susan T. Guy of Newtown, Pennsylvania, and Christi Patterson of Hattiesburg; a sister, Mary Louise Thomas of Hattiesburg; a brother, Dr. Douglas F. Thomas of Hattiesburg; and nine grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, J.H.C. Thomas, Sr., and Louise Sims Thomas; and

     WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of this dedicated and astute attorney and jurist, and we extend the thanks of a grateful state for his public service:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commend the life of public service of Chancellor James H.C. Thomas, Jr., of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and express to his surviving family our sympathy for his loss.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Chancellor Thomas, forwarded to the Mississippi Bar Association and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
