Senate Concurrent Resolution 504

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS OF FORMER STATE SENATOR AND REPRESENTATIVE JAMES DUDLEY (JAY) DISHAROON OF PORT GIBSON, MISSISSIPPI, AND EXTENDING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.

WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of a most able member of the Legislature, former State Senator and Representative Jay Disharoon. Born James Dudley Disharoon in Jackson, Mississippi, on March 10, 1949, a son of the late G. Lindsay Disharoon and Sarah McNeil Disharoon. Jay tragically passed from this life, along with his son, Jamie on June 10, 2014, in Jackson; and

WHEREAS, Jay grew up in Port Gibson and graduated Top of the Class from Port Gibson High School. He graduated with honors from both Mississippi State and Ole Miss, receiving degrees in History and Law, respectively; and

WHEREAS, he was a Veteran of the United States Army, having achieved the rank of Captain. Jay served in the State Senate and House of Representatives, and worked diligently to assist in passing laws regarding labor and community issues. Jay served in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1976-1980 and served in the Mississippi Senate from 1980-1988. As Chairman of the Senate Labor Committee, Senator Disharoon was responsible for bringing awareness to workers' rights and led numerous revisions to the Mississippi Workers' Compensation Law and the Unemployment Compensation Law; and

WHEREAS, Jay was a Petroleum Marketer and member of the Petroleum Marketers Association. He was active in civic matters and was a member of the Lions Club, the Claiborne County Chamber of Commerce, the Mississippi Economic Council and the Mississippi Farm Bureau; and

WHEREAS, he also served as Assistant District Attorney for Copiah County and owned several businesses in the Jackson area. At the time of his death, Jay was serving with the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers; and

WHEREAS, Jay was a devoted father, grandfather, and friend to many. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Terrie Davis Disharoon, and daughter, Rebecca Disharoon. Survivors include his children: John L. Disharoon, Andrew Disharoon, Christi Steijen, Amanda Eisenmenger, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Jennette, D'Arcy Disharoon and Sarah Disharoon Murray; and grandchildren, Claudia, Adrian, Adilyn, Blythe, Ella and Hayes; and

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Senate and House has lost one of its brightest stars, and the State of Mississippi has lost one of its most devoted and estimable citizens:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss of former State Senator and Representative James Dudley (Jay) Disharoon of Port Gibson, Mississippi, and extend the sympathy of the Legislature.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Senator Jay Disharoon, forwarded to the Mississippi Bar Association and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
