A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MISSISSIPPI'S COMMISSIONER OF AGRICULTURE AND COMMERCE CINDY HYDE-SMITH UPON HER APPOINTMENT AS CO-CHAIRMAN OF THE AGRICULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP AND HER SELECTION BY GOVERNING MAGAZINE AS A NATIONAL TOP 25 FEMALE LEADER.

     WHEREAS, Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Cindy Hyde-Smith of Brookhaven, Mississippi, has been named as Co-Chairman of the Agriculture Advisory Committee for the Donald Trump Presidential Campaign; and

     WHEREAS, President-elect Donald Trump unveiled a list of Agricultural Advisers on November 14, 2016, with strong ties to the agriculture industry.  The committee is charged with advising the President-elect on issues important to the American farmer, agribusinesses and rural America.  The 64-person committee includes the Chairmen of both the United States Senate and House Agriculture Committees, former United States Secretaries of Agriculture, current and former governors, including former Texas Governor Rick Perry, as well as business executives including Forrest Lucas, CEO of Lucas Oil; and

     WHEREAS, "The members of my Agricultural Advisory Committee represent the best that America can offer to help serve agricultural communities," President-elect Trump said; and

     WHEREAS, on November 16, 2016, Mississippi Agriculture Commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith was selected a "Top 25 Female Leaders" by Governing Magazine.  She attended a national awards event with other Top Female Leaders from other states, bringing extensive recognition to our state; and

     WHEREAS, Commissioner Hyde-Smith, who raises beef cattle, was elected to the Mississippi State Senate in 1999, where she served three terms.  During her tenure as Senator, she served as Chairman of the Agriculture Committee for two of those terms.  In 2011, she made history by becoming the first woman ever elected as Mississippi's Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce and was re-elected for a second term in 2015; and

     WHEREAS, known as a passionate advocate for agriculture, Hyde-Smith has been recognized by the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation and numerous other organizations for her outstanding leadership in agriculture, especially for her efforts to protect property rights of private landowners.  She was recently selected to lead the Southern United States Trade Association as its upcoming President beginning in 2017.  In August 2016, she received the distinguished honor of being named to The Governing Institute's Women in Leadership Class as one of the nation's top 25 women in politics.  At the invitation of the United States Department of Agriculture, Hyde-Smith participated in a Trade Mission to China in September 2016, where she met with foreign agriculture dignitaries and agribusinesses in efforts to increase agricultural trade opportunities; and

     WHEREAS, "I am so honored to have been chosen to serve in this capacity," Hyde-Smith said.  "This provides a great opportunity for Mississippi's agriculture industry, our state's largest industry, to have a voice on issues that impact our farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses daily, but even more importantly, playing a role in shaping agricultural policy at the national level gives me confidence that the voice of the American farmer is heard"; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a Mississippi citizen and former State Senator who has become a powerful role model for young women and girls who admire her integrity, her tenacity and for whom she blazed a trail as the first female Commissioner of Agriculture in Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mississippi's Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Cindy Hyde-Smith upon her appointment as Co-Chairman of the Agriculture Advisory Committee to President-elect Donald Trump and her selection by Governing Magazine as a national "Top 25 Female Leader," and extend to Commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith our best wishes as she represents Mississippi in this important capacity.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Commissioner Hyde-Smith and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
