AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 63-3-601, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO PROHIBIT CONTINUOUS TRAVEL BY A MOTOR VEHICLE IN THE OUTERMOST LEFT LANE OF A MULTILANE ROADWAY WHENEVER IT IMPEDES TRAFFIC FLOW; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. Section 63-3-601, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:
63-3-601. (1) Upon
all roadways of sufficient width, a vehicle shall not be driven
upon the * * * outermost left lane of the roadway, except as follows:
( * * *a) When overtaking and passing another
vehicle proceeding in the same direction under the rules governing such
movement;
( * * *b) When the right * * * lane or lanes of a
roadway * * *are
closed to traffic while under construction or repair;
( * * *c) Upon a roadway divided into three
(3) marked lanes for traffic under the rules applicable thereon; * * *
( * * *d) Upon a roadway designated and
signposted for one-way traffic * * *;
(e) When the right lane or lanes of the roadway are in disrepair or in an otherwise impassable or unsafe condition; or
(f) When preparing to exit the roadway on the left.
(2) A motor vehicle shall not be operated continuously in the outermost left lane of a multilane roadway when it impedes the flow of other traffic.
(3) A violation of this section is a misdemeanor punishable under Section 63-9-11.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2017.
