AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 5-1-1, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO PROVIDE THAT BEGINNING WITH THE 2023 STATEWIDE GENERAL ELECTION THE MISSISSIPPI HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES SHALL CONSIST OF 110 MEMBERS; TO AMEND SECTION 5-1-3, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO PROVIDE THAT BEGINNING WITH THE 2023 STATEWIDE GENERAL ELECTION THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE SHALL CONSIST OF 47 MEMBERS; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. Section 5-1-1, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:
5-1-1. From and after the first Tuesday after the first Monday of January 2024, the number of Representatives shall be one hundred ten (110) and shall be elected from one hundred ten (110) districts adopted by joint resolution as provided in Section 254 of the Mississippi Constitution of 1890.
SECTION 2. Section 5-1-3, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:
5-1-3. From and after the first Tuesday after the first Monday of January 2024, the number of Senators shall be forty-seven (47) and shall be elected from forty-seven (47) districts adopted by joint resolution as provided in Section 254 of the Mississippi Constitution of 1890.
SECTION 3. The Attorney General of the State of Mississippi shall submit this act, immediately upon approval by the Governor, or upon approval by the Legislature subsequent to a veto, to the Attorney General of the United States or to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in accordance with the provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended and extended.
SECTION 4. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after the date it is effectuated under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended and extended.
