A RESOLUTION COMMENDING REPRESENTATIVE CLARA HENDERSON BURNETT FOR HER YEARS OF OUTSTANDING AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI AND WISHING HER WELL UPON HER RETIREMENT.

     WHEREAS, the honorable and distinguished Representative Clara Henderson Burnett will retire from the Mississippi House of Representatives after tirelessly working on behalf of the people of Mississippi and House District 9, which includes parts of Coahoma, Panola, Quitman, Tate and Tunica Counties, for 12 consecutive years from the historical floor of the majestic and elaborate House Chamber; and

     WHEREAS, born on August 28, 1941, in Tunica, Mississippi, Representative Burnett graduated from Tunica County Vocational High School and earned her bachelor of science degree from Jackson State University and her master of science degree from Delta State University; and

     WHEREAS, filled with an eagerness to mold the minds of the younger generation, Representative Burnett taught school for many years, and each day that she entered the classroom until her retirement, she ignited a fire for knowledge in her pupils and equipped them with the life lessons and wisdom that would be essential for each of them to reach their potential, fulfill their dreams and achieve greatness; and

     WHEREAS, when she was elected to the House of Representatives in 2004, Representative Burnett utilized her education and tenure in the classroom to promote practical solutions and new ideas through state legislation, and the business experience she had gained through her position as funeral director also enabled her to furnish honesty, fairness and competent, logical reasoning to the citizens in her role as their chosen representative; and 

     WHEREAS, during her tenure as a legislator, she has served on the following committees:  County Affairs, Education, Enrolled Bills, Fees and Salaries of Public Officers, Gaming, Judiciary B, Juvenile Justice, Labor, Tourism, Universities and Colleges, and Youth and Family Affairs; and 

     WHEREAS, since 2004, Representative Burnett has gained the respect and trust of her fellow lawmakers, beginning as a freshman lawmaker and ultimately rising to become Vice Chairperson of the House Gaming Committee; and

     WHEREAS, not one to limit her community involvement to the Legislature, Representative Burnett, a devout member of the Methodist faith, has always been active in her community and dedicated to improving the quality of life for all citizens; and

     WHEREAS, while Representative Burnett will miss the wonderful people she worked with as a quiet yet conscientious and effective member of the House of Representatives, she is ecstatic to spend her retirement with her wonderful children, Rachelle and Cedric, and her vivacious grandchild, Christian; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Burnett has led and continues to lead a life of bravery in the face of challenge, sincerity in the face of apathy and honesty in the presence of deceit, and through it all, this remarkable person has remained a phenomenal woman, grounded in her integrity, who seeks to improve the lives of others through positive example and hard work; and

     WHEREAS, an exemplary public servant to the Magnolia State as the member of the House of Representatives from House District 9, Representative Clara Henderson Burnett's knowledge, skill and untiring laboriousness will be dearly missed by all of her colleagues and others who were lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with her and experience her greatness; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor the legacy of one of our own, Representative Clara Henderson Burnett, who has represented her district, this body and the people of this state with honor and dignity:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby honor the legislative legacy of Representative Clara Henderson Burnett, express gratitude for her many years of dedicated service to the people of the State of Mississippi and congratulate her upon her retirement from the Mississippi House of Representatives. 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Representative Clara Henderson Burnett and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
