A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE STELLAR COMMUNITY SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP OF MRS. GLENNETH LUCILLE OLIVER BERRY AND CONGRATULATING HER UPON BEING HONORED BY THE JASPER COUNTY TIOCH COMMUNITY CENTER, INC.
WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., once stated - "Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love," - and as such, has become the essence of service, the key ingredient that both inspires and sustains great humanitarians to serve, and serves as the nexus of commitment evidenced by Mrs. Glenneth Lucille Oliver Berry for which she is being honored by the Jasper County TIOCH Community Center, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on November 6, 1918, to Mrs. Mary and Mr. Glenn Oliver, Mrs. Berry, an esteemed and highly revered educator, completed her formal education at
Eureka High School and furthered her educational matriculation by attending Alcorn State University before transferring to Jackson State University, where she completed her baccalaureate degree studies in elementary education and, subsequent thereto, received her master's of science in education from the University of Southern Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Berry commenced her teaching career in the public school systems of Hattiesburg and Wiggins, Mississippi, and later move to the Enterprise School System, where her path intersected with that of William James Berry, another educator, whose lessons of love, chivalry and romanticism, affectionately gained her hand in marriage, a blessed and sacred union that welcomed the addition of five children: Glennie Alexander, William Douglas, Gladys Darlene, Mary Elizabeth and Otis Stanley; and
WHEREAS, together the couple moved to Leona Schools, then to South Side High School, which is now the William J. Berry Elementary, named in honor of her husband, and Mrs. Berry reached the pinnacle of her career at Heidelberg High School, where she retired after 42 years of laudable service as a public educator, having provided instruction in music, mathematics, elementary education and finally as Title I Coordinator; and
WHEREAS, ever the more committed to her faith as she was to her family and career, Mrs. Berry affiliated with Magnolia United Methodist Church, where she remains an active member today and exudes a hope for the coming of the resurrected savior by leading a life exemplary of the service Christ demonstrated throughout the sojourn of His earthly ministry; and
WHEREAS, possessing a fond love of music, Mrs. Berry continued as the musician each Sunday at the various churches in the community while teaching full time and nurturing her family on the principle tenets of life; and
WHEREAS, 2018 marked the official celebration of her centennial year of life, a time that afforded her the privilege of automatic investiture into the "Centenarian Club" in acknowledgment of 100 glorious years of living filled with love, mentorship, coaching, teaching, friendship and support, preeminent attributes both bestowed upon her entire family, the community and to education, which could never be repaid; and
WHEREAS, the Jasper County TIOCH Community Center, Inc., is tasked with providing community service opportunities and activities for residents of the Rose Hill and surrounding areas through educational and charitable programs which have benefited from the ability to stand upon the strong shoulders and refortified by the strength of Mrs. Berry, whose legacy will continue to be promoted; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to acknowledge the selfless generosity and timeless services of such remarkable individuals of Mrs. Berry's pristine caliber, whose life's works have established a respected rapport among the community and state that precedes her immediate presence:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the stellar community service and leadership of Mrs. Glenneth Lucille Oliver Berry, congratulate her upon being honored by the Jasper County TIOCH Community Center, Inc., and extend best wishes for continued health, prosperity and success in all of her future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Glenneth Lucille Oliver Berry and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
